CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 2,782 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,697.00, 32.3% of 2017 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Forester 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
64.3% of 2017 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact crossover that aims to do a little of everything. It is presented as a vehicle that can travel almost anywhere without costing much money, while also offering impressive levels of safety and crash protection. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want everyday usefulness, confidence in poor conditions, and a sensible ownership proposition.
What also makes the 2017 Forester distinctive is that it comes in two clearly different versions. The Forester 2.5i is described as the straightforward, sensibly priced choice that delivers what is good about the model, while the Forester 2.0XT adds power, performance, and a handful of exclusive features in an effort to bring more excitement. The tradeoff is that the more powerful version comes with both cost and compromise, so the right choice depends on what matters most to the buyer.
At the same time, the 2017 model is not portrayed as a major redesign, since it is said to receive only minor sprucing up and to be due for a significant overhaul. That gives the Forester a familiar, established character rather than a fresh one, but it also helps explain its appeal: it focuses on the strengths that matter most to many shoppers, even if it is nearing the end of its current run.

I fell in love with this car at first sight. I drove and considered a 2025 Forester to compare and could not move to 2025. The 2017 Forester is friendly, bright, wide visibility, you sit high in it, it has a smooth ride and has all the basics that you need. My particular pre-owned model had a quality I cannot describe that is probably due to the previous owner but it is a perfect car. I would not hesitate to buy at 2017 Forester, unless it is truly toward the end of its life.

Excellent value for the money, the moon roof extends back to the third row and is my favorite feature. Very kid friendly, and exceptionally comfortable. Packed with all the creature comforts one could want in a vehicle.

It’s my first subaru and I’m already in love with the whole brand! The adaptive cruise control is one amazing feature, the cabin feels cavernous, and I feel glued to the road.

If you live in an area where 4 wheel drive is a winter necessity the Subaru Forester fills that need with comfort and stability. The all wheel drive (AWD) that never shuts off gives more sure footed traction Winter and Summer. It doesnt matter if you buy the basic model or the luxury model the AWD and stability control are standard features.

How much does the 2017 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,714 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,224.66 |
| Year-Round High | $15,185.71 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,190 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.14% |
Prices have softened 3.14% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,856 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,224.66, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru Forester earns a 4.67/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating.
The model scores 7/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its exceptional safety features, spacious interior, and reliable all-wheel-drive capabilities. They also point to great value and impressive technology, which fits the Forester’s role as a practical compact crossover that can handle everyday use and poor weather without asking much of you.
With its focus on usefulness, confidence in rough conditions, and sensible ownership costs, it suits you well if you want a compact SUV that does a little of everything. 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2017 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliable all-wheel-drive capabilities, great value, and a vehicle that feels well suited to long-term use. The expert notes also describe it as delivering decent reliability and a clear purpose, with the kind of durability that lets you use it without worrying too much about everyday wear.
The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that the less expensive version gets better gas mileage and may even be more affordable to insure. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is not the basic design itself but the possibility of hidden issues in individual listings, so condition and history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Forester?
At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, structural repair, uneven panel gaps, and any evidence that the vehicle has been used hard or poorly maintained.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Forester 2.5i is the straightforward, sensibly priced choice, while the Forester 2.0XT adds power, performance, and exclusive features. The base model is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment, while the higher trims bring a more premium feel.
- Powertrain: The Forester 2.5i is the less expensive choice, while the turbocharged 2.0XT delivers 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0XT also uses a CVT and can feel less refined, with noticeable turbo lag and uneven power delivery.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. Rear Automatic Braking and automatic high-beam assist are available, and some features are not universally standard across the lineup.
- Infotainment: Most trims get a larger 7-inch display, and the upgraded Starlink system adds text-messaging support and Siri Eyes Free compatibility. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0XT is rated at 25 mpg in combined driving, and the cost-effectiveness commentary says the 2.5i gets better gas mileage.
Which 2017 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2017 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: Forester 2.5i, Premium, Limited, and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Forester 2.5i: This is the best-value starting point if you want the Forester’s core strengths without paying for extra power or luxury touches. It gives you the practical, sensible side of the model that makes the most sense for budget-minded shoppers.
- Premium: This trim is the step up if you want more equipment and a better overall balance of comfort and value. It’s the trim to consider if you want a more complete Forester without jumping all the way to the top.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and more available equipment while staying focused on everyday usefulness. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than chasing the highest trim.
- Touring: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest equipment and the premium details highlighted in the test-drive notes. It makes sense if you want the most refined Forester experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package centers on EyeSight, and the available driver-assistance features are a major reason to prioritize trims that include it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,856 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,224.66, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $14,714 sits slightly below last year's $15,190.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. If you buy well now, you reduce the risk of overpaying into a cooling market. Strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment will matter more when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Subaru Forester safe?
It remains one of the safest choices in the small SUV segment, and the federal government gives it a four-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal impact collision.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Forester’s EyeSight suite uses color stereo cameras and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. Rear Automatic Braking is available, and automatic high-beam assist and steering-responsive headlights also debut for this year.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind: the safety tech does not always work flawlessly, lane-keeping assist can feel disconcerting, and the high-beam assist system does not always activate when expected. Even so, the overall safety story remains a major strength.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a new EyeSight system, improved Starlink infotainment, and more standard and available equipment for the year.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,824, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,714 average.
- It offers nearly class-leading space and a close-to-perfect safety score.
The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more current version, the 2017 is the stronger all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers much of the same practical appeal.
