CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 164 currently listed for sale near Cincinnati, OH and an average price of $10,952, 22.0% of 2015 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Forester 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
99.4% of 2015 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Forester stands out as a crossover that puts value and safety ahead of flash. It earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it was also named Best Value. The expert test drive data describes it as a strong choice for buyers who do not care about the latest tech or the most luxurious interior, which helps define its appeal: it is practical, well-regarded, and easy to recommend for shoppers focused on substance.
It also benefits from being fresh off a 2014 redesign, which had already drawn praise. Motor Trend named it SUV of the Year, and the test-drive summary says that after a week in a 2.5i Premium trim, the reviewer understood the enthusiasm a little better. Owner feedback reinforces the Forester’s reputation for smooth handling, a spacious interior, comfort, safety features, fuel efficiency, and practicality, while also noting concerns about reliability and an infotainment system that can feel outdated.

Reviewed a 2015 Subaru 2.5i Limited on Jun 11, 2014
After 10 years with my old car, I have been checking out what's on the market. I hadn't considered a Subaru until someone suggested how much their friend liked their new Forester. So, not expecting much, I test drove one, three times so far. I was very favorably impressed. For a SUV, handling was quite nimble but was still comfortable over rough roads, railroad tracks and the like, while remaining solid and quiet. The base 2.5i engine was more than adequate for my needs. The interior is very spacious and the visibility great. The front seats could be a little better, but that can be said about most of the small SUVs on the market, and the overall design and infotainment systems are a bit out of date, but I can forgive that since I value the driving aspects of the car more. Overall, it is a great value for the money, even at the higher trim levels. It's my choice when I trade cars later this summer.

This vehicle is a great fit for me and my lifestyle. Plenty of room, runs really well, the moon roof is fantastic.

I loved my 2015 Subaru Forester ! It was comfortable and we went everywhere in it. No mountain too tall. Unfortunately it was totaled. We were not hurt due to its safety features. I’m looking for another and possibly a 2016.

I drove several models, but the Subaru Forester had plenty of pep, and was a very smooth operating vehicle. I compared it to the VW Tiguan and the Nissan Rogue. Feature for feature the Forester is the best value for my dollar.

How much does the 2015 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,337 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,885 |
| Year-Round High | $11,468 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,407 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.61% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 2,393 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 4.67/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 7.17/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth handling, spacious interior, and practical value, and they also highlight its fuel efficiency and comfort. That lines up with the Forester’s role as a crossover for you if you care more about substance than flash, especially if you want a practical, well-regarded daily driver with broad appeal.
With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful market availability if you’re shopping carefully.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to the Forester as reliable, practical, and a vehicle many drivers feel they can count on for everyday use.
The expert drive notes describe it as a good balance for a reliable family and grocery hauler, which reinforces the idea that it’s built for steady, repeatable ownership rather than drama. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention Subaru’s strong resale and low cost to own reputation for 2015, which supports the case for long-term value.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that some listings may hide wear or maintenance history, so condition and service records matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance equipment still functions as expected. Because owner feedback mentions reliability concerns and outdated infotainment, it’s smart to pay close attention to how the car has aged inside and out.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5i Premium adds more equipment than the lower trims, and the EyeSight-equipped version brings the most meaningful safety upgrade. If you want the best value, the Premium trim is the one to focus on because it balances equipment and price more effectively than the base setup.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a CVT in the 2.5i and 2.5i Premium, while the turbocharged 2.0XT brings a 250-hp 2.0-liter engine with 258 lb-ft of torque. The CVT returns 24 mpg city/32 highway, the 6-speed manages 22/29, and the turbo is rated at 23/28.
- Safety package: EyeSight adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise, lane-departure and sway warnings, plus pre-collision throttle management. It is a meaningful upgrade, but it can disengage in low-visibility conditions.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 4.3 inches, and the optional navigation system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen. The system is dated, and the tech setup is one of the weakest parts of the vehicle.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT returns 24 mpg city/32 highway, the 6-speed manages 22/29, and the turbocharged setup is rated at 23/28.
Which 2015 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Forester is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest cost, but you should expect the most basic equipment and the least polished experience. It makes sense if your priority is simply getting into a Forester with the standard safety and utility formula.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the equipment most shoppers will actually notice without pushing you into the pricier turbo model. It’s the trim that best matches the Forester’s practical, well-rounded character.
- 2.0XT: This is the choice if you want the strongest acceleration and the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine’s extra punch. It suits you best if performance matters more than keeping costs and complexity down.
The EyeSight safety package is the key trim-level safety upgrade to look for.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,393 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,885, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $11,337 sits slightly below last year's $11,407.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to resell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier for you to estimate future value without worrying about sharp swings. The Forester’s broad appeal and practical reputation should continue to support demand, especially among shoppers who want safety and utility over luxury.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2015 Subaru Forester earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes symmetrical AWD, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a strong airbag lineup that includes front pelvis/torso, side-curtain, and driver’s knee airbags. The EyeSight suite adds pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise, lane-departure and sway warnings, plus pre-collision throttle management. The main caveat is that EyeSight can disengage in fog, snow, rain, or bright sunlight, so you should not assume it will always be active.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It’s fresh off a redesign and pairs strong safety with practical value.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $10,001, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $11,337 average.
- It emphasizes all-weather confidence and practical versatility.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,631, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $11,337 average.
- It adds a new touchscreen interface and broader overall polish.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and everyday usefulness, the 2015 is the smart default. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2014 can save you money while keeping the Forester’s core strengths intact. If you want a newer-feeling cabin and can spend more, the 2016 is the better step up.
