2015 BMW i3 test drive
overall
The BMW i3 is an interesting proof-of-concept for the automaker that battery-first tech has a future in the rest of its lineup.
The small, lumpy i3 hatchback may not look like a BMW underneath all of its badges and grilles, but it does have enough tech to make up for it. A carbon fiber and aluminum body, and lightweight materials inside, help a 22kWh battery power the i3 for 80 miles on electricity alone—when fitted with an optional "range extending" gas-powered generator, twice that. Its $42,400 entry price isn't for the squeamish, but the "gee-whiz" tech helps make up for that.

It has nearly all the features I am looking for but two. I would like the bigger battery pack and I do not think the Rex system is needed for my use case.

Great car for graceful people who don't have to travel very far on a single charge. I knocked heads with the passenger as we buckled up (I'm under 5' tall, so this was a width/coordination problem). The backseat is incredibly small with no windows, which was a no-go for my kid. The car was adorable and super fun to drive, though. If I were single and childless I would have bought it.

This is a high end version with driver and parking assist, leather interior and bigger display screens. The wood dash adds to a beautiful contrast with the brown seating. It was a great deal. Accepting the relatively short driving range will be OK once I use it for commuting. Long distance travel (drive it home over 300 miles) is challenging even with the clever extended range feature. It is a work of art and technology!

Car drives smoothly with good acceleration. Not a lot of cargo space, but would be perfect for a couple or a family with a child. If you are a minimalist, this car would work fantastic for you, car is quirky but quirky is better than sitting on the roadside because you cant afford gas.

Is the 2015 BMW i3 a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.00/10. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, and fun driving experience. You also see recurring positives around the quirky design and the convenience of electric driving, especially for commuting.
The market signal is mixed but workable, with 11.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free feel for everyday commuting, with buyers appreciating how easy it is to count on for routine electric driving.
The expert drive notes reinforce that sense of consistency by describing the car’s unusual but repeatable driving character, including its aggressive brake regeneration and city-friendly electric range. BMW also says the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car’s limited range and battery-focused use case still fit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW i3?
At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with prior body damage or a higher-mileage battery pack. Pay close attention to overall condition, because the i3’s value depends heavily on how well its unique materials, interior, and electric hardware have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Mega trim uses 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric, the Giga adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash, and the Tera adds a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. The base trim is the most stripped-down of the three, so you’ll want to compare cabin materials carefully if you care about the upscale feel.
- Powertrain: You get a 170-hp all-electric setup with rear-wheel drive and a single-speed transmission. The optional range extender adds a 600cc generator engine that does not drive the wheels, and efficiency is strongest in city use.
- Infotainment: The optional 10.2-inch high-definition screen is the key tech upgrade, and the car uses BMW’s iDrive system. The Technology + Driving Assistance Package adds the high-def screen and real-time traffic info.
- Fuel efficiency: The i3 is rated at 117 mpge on electricity alone and 39 mpg when using the range extender.
Which 2015 BMW i3 trim should I buy?
The 2015 BMW i3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Mega, Giga, Tera.
Here's the short version:
- Mega: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core i3 experience with 19-inch tires and Sensa-tec fabric. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and care more about the electric driving experience than cabin upgrades.
- Giga: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds leather seats and an open-pore eucalyptus-wood dash, which noticeably lifts the cabin. If you want the i3’s tech-forward personality with a more premium feel, this is the one to target.
- Tera: This is the most upscale version, with a leather dash and hand-stitched accents. Choose it if you want the richest interior presentation and are willing to pay for the top cabin treatment.
Antilock brakes and child seat safety latches are standard across all versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW i3?
This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 11.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 102 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 73.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,392.96, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 BMW i3 safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Due to its extremely low volume, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the i3 for crash safety.
BMW says the i3 uses LifeDrive construction to compartmentalize and protect the passenger cabin in a crash, with carbon fiber composites reinforcing collision areas. Front- and side-impact airbags are included, along with antilock brakes and child seat safety latches as standard equipment.
Should I buy a 2015 BMW i3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 11.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2015 stands out for its tech-heavy, quirky electric character and strong city-driving efficiency.
Consider the 2014 if:
- It set the template for the i3’s unusual, compact, tech-forward driving experience.
The bottom line: You should focus on the 2015 if you want the i3’s distinctive electric personality and can verify a clean history. If you’re shopping mainly on price, the 2014 is worth a look for the same basic experience with a simpler value proposition.
