CarGurus Analysis: 2015 BMW X5
overall

Summary
With 1,111 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,857.00, 33.9% of 2015 BMW X5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 BMW X5 4.55 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
61.7% of 2015 BMW X5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 BMW X5 stands out for the way it blends SUV practicality with the kind of driving feel BMW is known for. BMW built the X5 to handle like a 5 Series, and that focus on sensations behind the wheel remains one of its defining traits. It is also described as the best-selling of BMW’s sporty SUVs and crossovers, which helps explain why it has been such a familiar sight on the road.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the X5 offers a fast, swift-handling, jacked-up wagon character with all-wheel drive. That makes it distinctive among luxury SUVs, especially for shoppers who care as much about driving enjoyment as they do about utility. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests the 2015 X5 can feel expensive, and some drivers noted the absence of certain modern safety features that are more common in other vehicles.

Overall, it’s a great car. Fantastic design and amenities. Only drawback is that it’s missing some things that are more standard on lesser cars nowadays like lane guidance, blind spot detection and emergency braking. It’s hard to find an older car with these options because they were a premium years ago. Build quality and beauty of car is off the charts.

Is the 2015 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2015 BMW X5 earns a 4.55/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its performance, style, and luxurious features, and they also call out the smooth ride and strong power. The overview points to a practical luxury SUV with all-wheel drive and a driving feel that stands out from many rivals, especially if you care about both utility and engagement behind the wheel. Good and great deals make up 33.4% of listings, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.55/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a model that feels impressive, luxurious, and satisfying to live with, while also suggesting it can be expensive. The expert evaluation reinforces that this X5 stays true to BMW’s performance-focused character and remains well finished, which supports confidence in how it holds up as a premium SUV. BMW also notes that the X5 offers a strong safety feature set for the class, which adds to its everyday dependability.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is cost: even a well-liked luxury SUV can become expensive when maintenance or repairs arrive.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW X5?
At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment level matches what the seller claims. Because this is a premium SUV, it also makes sense to check that all major features work as expected before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The X5 starts with a base rear-wheel-drive sDrive35i, while all-wheel drive is standard on the other trims. Higher trims add more luxury and equipment, and the most heavily optioned versions can become very expensive.
- Powertrain: The X5 offers a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 300 hp and a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 445 hp. The six-cylinder is the preferred choice for many shoppers because it balances strong performance with better fuel economy.
- Safety package: The Active Driving Assistant adds forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard.
- Infotainment: The X5 uses a 10.2-inch LCD screen, and the system includes an overhead camera view, a searchable digital owner’s manual, live traffic, Internet browsing, oil-level checks, and night vision. The tech suite is extensive, but much of it depends on option packages.
- Fuel efficiency: The 3.0-liter inline six returned 24 mpg, while the V8 returned 17 mpg. BMW also uses Eco Pro mode to help claim higher fuel economy.
Which 2015 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2015 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, xDrive50i, X5 M.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The sDrive35i is the least expensive entry point, but it lacks standard all-wheel drive and can feel light on the luxury and safety extras that many shoppers expect.
- Sweet-spot trim: The xDrive35i is the best value for most buyers because it adds all-wheel drive while keeping the X5’s core performance and everyday usability intact.
- Premium/top trim: The xDrive50i brings the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and the strongest straight-line performance, along with the kind of high-end feel that suits a loaded luxury SUV.
- Off-road trim: The X5 M is the most extreme choice, but its performance focus makes it less practical for typical daily driving.
The optional Active Driving Assistant is the safety package to look for if you want forward collision alert with automatic braking and lane-departure warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW X5?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,114 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.28% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,807.36, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $12,798 sits slightly below last year's $14,107.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to resell later, the current pricing gives you a lower entry cost, but it also means future appreciation is unlikely. The strongest resale outcomes usually come from well-kept examples with desirable equipment and clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.55/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 BMW X5 safe?
It earns five-star ratings from federal crash tests and the top Good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Should I buy a 2015 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.55/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong performance with a refined cabin and a broad set of available luxury and safety features.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $11,900, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $12,798 average.
- It emphasizes performance and helped establish the X5’s identity as a sporty luxury SUV.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2015 is the stronger pick because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2014 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still delivers the X5’s core appeal.
