What should I look for when buying a used 2015 BMW X5?

At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially on bodywork, electronics, and any signs of uneven wear. Because this is a luxury SUV with lots of available equipment, condition matters as much as mileage. Pay close attention to whether the features you want are actually present, since many items were bundled into packages.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X5 lineup includes five trims, with the base rear-wheel-drive sDrive35i standing apart from the all-wheel-drive versions. The cabin is described as more upscale than the previous generation, with plusher materials, two-tone color choices, ambient lighting, and matte-finish wood, while the available third row adds space for two children.
• Powertrain: The xDrive35i’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six makes 300 hp and is described as the preferred engine for its broad torque and velvety exhaust note. The xDrive50i’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 makes 445 hp and delivers much quicker acceleration, while the diesel xDrive35d is mentioned as a fuel-saving alternative.
• Safety package: The optional Active Driving Assist adds forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard.
• Infotainment: The X5 uses a 10.2-inch LCD screen and BMW’s iDrive system. It includes a searchable digital owner’s manual, live traffic, Internet browsing, oil-level checks, and pedestrian spotting with night vision. Cameras around the vehicle create an overhead view, and the system can be paired with adaptive cruise control for stop-and-go traffic capability.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert text notes 24 mpg for the xDrive35i and 17 mpg for the V8 model.

Which 2015 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2015 BMW X5 is offered in 5 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, xDrive50i, X5 M.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive35i: This is the rear-wheel-drive entry point, so it makes sense if you want the X5 experience at the lowest starting point and do not need standard AWD.
• xDrive35i: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it pairs the preferred 300-hp inline-six with standard AWD and the X5’s core luxury-sport character.
• xDrive35d: Choose this if you want the diesel alternative mentioned in the test drive notes and are prioritizing efficiency over outright speed.
• xDrive50i: This trim is for you if you want the strongest mainstream performance, with the 445-hp twin-turbo V8 and the quickest acceleration in the lineup.
• X5 M: This is the top performance model, and it suits buyers who want the most extreme version of the X5’s sporty personality.

The optional Active Driving Assist package adds forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 BMW X5?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,034 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.87% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,380, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2015 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $12,387 sits slightly below last year's $13,743.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, because a lower entry price can help cushion depreciation. Strong owner satisfaction can also support demand when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2015 BMW X5 safe?

The 2015 BMW X5 earns five-star ratings from federal crash tests and a top Good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The optional Active Driving Assist brings forward collision alert with automatic braking for cars and pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and a backup camera are available, but they are not standard. The X5 also includes the usual airbags and stability control, along with luxury-brand touches like brakes that dry themselves in the rain and compensate for fade over repeated stops.

Should I buy a 2015 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.87% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2015 keeps the X5’s strong performance focus while pairing it with a well-regarded 7.8/10 expert rating.

Consider the 2014 if:

• At $11,813, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $12,387 average.
• It is a performance-first luxury SUV with established prestige and strong sporty character.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing context and a broad pool of listings, the 2015 is the better starting point. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2014 is the more budget-friendly path.
