overall

Summary
With 806 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,728, 30.3% of 2014 Volkswagen Passat listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Volkswagen Passat 4.28 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan built at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility and designed with American buyers in mind, which shows up most clearly in its emphasis on space. It is also described as an attractive, composed sedan, and its larger size and ride quality were aimed at a broader audience than the enthusiast-focused image Volkswagen had long cultivated.
As part of Volkswagen’s fifth-generation Passat, the 2014 model reflects a shift toward practicality and wider appeal. The available information points to a car that balances comfort and everyday usability, with owners praising its excellent fuel economy, comfortable interior, smooth handling, and spacious legroom. At the same time, some reviewers noted missing features, conservative styling, and a lack of advanced technology compared with competitors, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value room, comfort, and value over flashier equipment.

I love the ride and features of this car. Handles great and although the price of diesel is more, I know the mileage you get from a diesel is greater compared to gas. Love the leg room also, both front and rear areas.

I've driven a lot of cars and this is one of my all time favorites. The Passat TDI even as a base car comes nicely loaded, the SEL has some added luxuries that make longer drives even nicer. The interior has decent styling and comfortable seats. It's the type of car you can buy and really enjoy driving because it's not breaking your bank account to drive with either the payment or the fuel bill. I would recommend looking into this car if you're in the market for a sedan. Don't be afraid of diesel.

Unlike the pictures and the legality of the tinted windows was a suprise as well as a missing right mirror and many minor but important damages including broken windshield.

Reviewed a 2014 Volkswagen TDI SE on Dec 7, 2014
So far a total of four NMS Passats in the family. All TDI's. I think this says something. Some will take issue with the conservative styling compared to the flashy offerings of other makers. Some will disagree but I tend to believe the conservative style will age far better. Then being basically German and not Asian... It's one of those things you either appreciate or don't. If you appreciate engineering and build quality, then place the NMS up on a rack and do a complete inspection. There's a reason that a decade old VW will not be rusted out. There's also a reason that at 100k miles the TDI is just getting her first wind. It's really difficult to quantify the difference between VW and most other competitive vehicles but it's truly vast. Downsides? There are some for some types of owners. If all you ever do is climb into your car and turn the key, then perhaps the Passat in general and the TDI in particular may not be your best choice. My experience with many TDI's of different vintages is that they will not tolerate neglect. Have the proper maintenance done or do it yourself. Don't skimp and don't use cheap components. If you fail to keep up there will usually be a price to be paid somewhere down the road. The biggest con? Not opting for the TDI. It makes the Passat something very special.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and interior wear match the mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as simple but not spartan, with an upscale look, while the test model lacked foglights and used hard plastic and fake leather. That makes feature content and interior condition especially important if you want the most polished version of the car.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a turbocharged 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder. The diesel is the efficiency standout, while the V6 is the strongest choice if you want more power.
- Safety package: The car includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System. It also has front and side airbags.
- Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth, USB-connected device support, and access to music files by artist and more. The text also notes a hardline iPhone connection and limited app controls beyond pause, skip back, and skip ahead.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, the 1.8T at 24 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, the V6 at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, and the TDI is described as the mileage master.
Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat’s roomy cabin and composed ride. It is the trim to consider if value matters most and you can live without extra convenience and luxury features.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more appealing mix of equipment without pushing you into the highest price brackets. If you want the sweet spot between affordability and comfort, this is the one to target.
- SEL: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it. It suits buyers who care more about added comfort and features than about keeping the purchase price as low as possible.
- SEL Premium: This is the top-end choice for shoppers who want the most feature-rich Passat. It is the trim to buy if you want the most upscale version and are comfortable paying for it.
The safety content highlights a strong standard safety foundation, including stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, and the Intelligent Crash Response System.

- Inventory: There are 806 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.13% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $7,710, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $7,710 sits slightly below last year's $8,213.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a lower cost today, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. For a seller, the key advantage is that the Passat still has broad appeal thanks to its roomy cabin, comfort, and value positioning.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The safety equipment includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, front and side airbags, and an Intelligent Crash Response System that turns off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights after a crash.
One caveat is the backup camera interface, which is described as unnecessarily shrinking the screen.
Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
