Expert review
The Passat is built at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility and designed with American buyers in mind—that means space, and lots of it.
One of the most important aspects of going to a high-school reunion is what to wear. You want to dress up but not too much, so as to send the right message. Go in a suit, and people will think you’re either overcompensating or that this is the biggest thing that goes on for you all year. Dress too down, and folks will think you haven’t done anything with your life (because people are mean). You need to strike a blend of casual and classy that says, “I’m doing important things, but I’m not full of myself.” You might have difficulty striking this balance with your attire selection, but a Volkswagen Passat sends all the right messages, delivering you to your night of catching up (read: comparing careers and seeing who’s married and has kids) at the wheel of an attractive, composed sedan.
The fifth-generation 2014 Passat is part of Volkswagen’s campaign to target larger sales numbers rather than the enthusiast drivers who could always rely on VW for corner-carving fun. The new Passat is larger, with a ride that will appeal to a far greater audience and technology that any driver can appreciate.

What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat appreciate its excellent fuel economy, comfortable interior, and smooth handling. Many drivers enjoy the spacious legroom and the value it offers as a midsize sedan. However, some reviewers pointed out issues with missing features and the conservative styling of the car, while others expressed minor concerns about maintenance and the lack of advanced technology in comparison to competitors."
I love the ride and features of this car. Handles great and although the price of diesel is more, I know the mileage you get from a diesel is greater compared to gas. Love the leg room also, both front and rear areas.
January 16, 2023I've driven a lot of cars and this is one of my all time favorites. The Passat TDI even as a base car comes nicely loaded, the SEL has some added luxuries that make longer drives even nicer. The interior has decent styling and comfortable seats. It's the type of car you can buy and really enjoy driving because it's not breaking your bank account to drive with either the payment or the fuel bill. I would recommend looking into this car if you're in the market for a sedan. Don't be afraid of diesel.
June 2, 2014Unlike the pictures and the legality of the tinted windows was a suprise as well as a missing right mirror and many minor but important damages including broken windshield.

April 6, 2022So far a total of four NMS Passats in the family. All TDI's. I think this says something. Some will take issue with the conservative styling compared to the flashy offerings of other makers. Some will disagree but I tend to believe the conservative style will age far better. Then being basically German and not Asian... It's one of those things you either appreciate or don't. If you appreciate engineering and build quality, then place the NMS up on a rack and do a complete inspection. There's a reason that a decade old VW will not be rusted out. There's also a reason that at 100k miles the TDI is just getting her first wind. It's really difficult to quantify the difference between VW and most other competitive vehicles but it's truly vast. Downsides? There are some for some types of owners. If all you ever do is climb into your car and turn the key, then perhaps the Passat in general and the TDI in particular may not be your best choice. My experience with many TDI's of different vintages is that they will not tolerate neglect. Have the proper maintenance done or do it yourself. Don't skimp and don't use cheap components. If you fail to keep up there will usually be a price to be paid somewhere down the road. The biggest con? Not opting for the TDI. It makes the Passat something very special.
December 7, 2014The car is awesome, the issue is that the dealership try to hide all the rust on the vehicle by hot gluing and spray painting where it rusted.
September 15, 2022Quick. Handles well. Great mileage. Timeless design. Sad they discontinued it.
February 25, 2023Great price for a mid size sedan, good mpg & handles well!
July 26, 2021Everything about it is fantastic! Owning this has sold me on the TDI brand for life. Having the Diesel engine is a bit more expensive so I wouldn't suggest buying a new one unless you plan on driving 20k+ miles/year, or you intend on owning it for the 200k+ miles it's built to stand up for.
January 27, 2015This is an excellent value. I think VW should nave kept the v6. This Passat is like a luxury car with a smooth ride, good handling and plenty of power.
November 23, 2021I just purchased my second 2014 VW Passat due to the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed owning the first one. The car rides awesome and got great gas mileage. No major issues with the first one so Im hoping I have the same luck with this one.
