What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?

At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and interior wear match the mileage and asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is described as simple but not spartan, with an upscale look, while the test model lacked foglights and used hard plastic and fake leather. That makes feature content and interior condition especially important if you want the most polished version of the car.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a turbocharged 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder. The diesel is the efficiency standout, while the V6 is the strongest choice if you want more power.
• Safety package: The car includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System. It also has front and side airbags.
• Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth, USB-connected device support, and access to music files by artist and more. The text also notes a hardline iPhone connection and limited app controls beyond pause, skip back, and skip ahead.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, the 1.8T at 24 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, the V6 at 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, and the TDI is described as the mileage master.

Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat’s roomy cabin and composed ride. It is the trim to consider if value matters most and you can live without extra convenience and luxury features.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more appealing mix of equipment without pushing you into the highest price brackets. If you want the sweet spot between affordability and comfort, this is the one to target.
• SEL: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for it. It suits buyers who care more about added comfort and features than about keeping the purchase price as low as possible.
• SEL Premium: This is the top-end choice for shoppers who want the most feature-rich Passat. It is the trim to buy if you want the most upscale version and are comfortable paying for it.

The safety content highlights a strong standard safety foundation, including stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, and the Intelligent Crash Response System.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 806 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,710, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $7,710 sits slightly below last year's $8,213.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a lower cost today, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. For a seller, the key advantage is that the Passat still has broad appeal thanks to its roomy cabin, comfort, and value positioning.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2014 Passat earns a Top Safety Pick+ accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety equipment includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, front and side airbags, and an Intelligent Crash Response System that turns off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and activates the hazard lights after a crash.

One caveat is the backup camera interface, which is described as unnecessarily shrinking the screen.

Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

• 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.13% compared with last year.

• The expert summary emphasizes a roomy, composed sedan with a broader, comfort-first mission.

The bottom line: The 2014 Passat makes the most sense if you want a roomy, comfortable midsize sedan with strong value and a softer used-car price. If you’re price-sensitive, this year is especially worth a look; if you want the newest possible version, compare it against nearby years only after checking whether they offer a meaningfully better feature set or condition.
