Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Toyota Highlander 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family crossover that feels more engaging than the segment stereotype suggests. Toyota gave it enough power, technology, and athletic styling to make everyday driving feel more appealing, while still keeping it practical for routine errands and weekend trips. It is described as being just as capable and competent running to the corner store as it is heading up to the mountains, which captures its broad usefulness well.
That balance is a big part of its appeal. The Highlander is presented as a vehicle for buyers who need family-friendly space and versatility but do not want something dull to live with. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for reliability, comfort, value for money, and a spacious interior with useful features. At the same time, some owners wished for better fuel economy and seat comfort, and noted the absence of modern conveniences such as push-button start and a sunroof.

Overall the experience of driving the vehicle is fantastic. The higher seating above a sedan car makes this a pleasant ride in any weather enabling the driver to see far ahead when driving in heavy traffic. It has enough air bags to float a tank.

Our Limited AWD is a very solid car that we expect to drive for a long time. Very comfortable seats. The space is easily configured for people or cargo. Love the shelf under the dash!

Overall... excellent vehicle. Front row and 2nd row seats adjust to accommodate most drivers/riders. I did alot of shopping around before I made my purchase and what I found is that the Highlander is really the best value for the money. The interior is very nice... not cheap looking as compared to some other mid-size SUVs which were actually more expensive.

The car feels solid, that’s what I was looking for. The downside is that the seats are uncomfortable and the mirrors don’t fold in.

How much does the 2014 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,207 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,949.72 |
| Year-Round High | $16,216.27 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,123 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.52% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 1,169 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy. If you find a listing below $14,949.72, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 4.78/5 user rating and 8.67/10 expert rating both point to a strong overall showing. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, comfort, and value for money, and they also like the spacious interior and useful features. In practical terms, that lines up well with a family crossover that is meant to handle everyday errands and weekend trips without feeling dull. The market also shows healthy interest, with 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2014 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The user feedback also highlights reliability, and the expert write-up reinforces that this is a vehicle built to be dependable and useful over time.
The performance notes suggest it is engineered to be capable in everyday driving, with a V6 that is better suited to the vehicle than the base four-cylinder and an AWD system described as more robust than typical crossover setups. The cost-effectiveness commentary also emphasizes that it delivers a lot of content for the price.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well, since condition and prior use will matter more than the model’s broad reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the features you care about are actually present on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE trim brings standard seating for 8, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, backup camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and lots of storage cubbies. LE Plus adds three-zone climate control with rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex leatherette seating. XLE adds navigation, leather seating, and a detailed color digital display in the instrument panel, while Limited adds 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring.
- Powertrain: The base LE uses a 185-hp 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder, but the 3.5-liter V6 is the better fit and is optional on LE and standard on LE Plus and above. The V6 makes 270 hp, pairs with a 6-speed automatic, and front-wheel-drive V6 trims are rated at 19 mpg city and 25 highway.
- Safety package: The Highlander comes standard with a backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of advanced front and side impact airbags. With the available pre-collision system, it earns a Top Safety Pick Plus award, and available driver aids include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Entune, which includes apps such as Pandora, Yelp, and Bing. Navigation is available, but it is accessed through the app page rather than a dedicated dash button.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 with front-wheel drive is rated at 19 mpg city and 25 highway, while the base I4 with front-wheel drive is rated at 20 mpg city and 25 highway. An AWD V6 test trim was listed at 18/24.
Which 2014 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2014 Toyota Highlander is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Highlander experience with 8-passenger seating, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, backup camera, Bluetooth, and plenty of storage. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the nicer comfort and tech upgrades.
- LE Plus: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds three-zone climate control, rear climate toggles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and SofTex seating without jumping all the way to the pricier upper trims. If you want a more polished family setup, this is the sweet spot.
- XLE: This trim is for you if navigation and leather matter, along with the color digital display in the instrument panel. It feels like the step up for buyers who want more convenience and a more upscale cabin.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, with 19-inch wheels, a JBL audio system, and upgraded safety tech like blind-spot monitoring. Choose it if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is strongest when the available pre-collision system is equipped, since that configuration is tied to the Top Safety Pick Plus recognition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Toyota Highlander?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,169 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,949.72, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $16,207 sits slightly above last year's $16,123.
That kind of stability suggests the market has been fairly consistent, which is helpful if you plan to resell later. You are not looking at a model year that appears to be swinging sharply in either direction, so pricing should remain relatively predictable. Strong demand for family-friendly crossovers also helps support values when the vehicle is well kept.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. If you are shopping used, it is worth confirming whether the specific trim has the available pre-collision system, since that is the key safety upgrade tied to the strongest recognition.
Should I buy a 2014 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 model stands out for bringing more power, technology, and athletic styling to a family crossover without giving up everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: If you want a used Highlander that balances family practicality with a more engaging feel, the 2014 is a solid place to focus. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and look for a well-kept example near the lower end of the market range, but the best buys will be the ones with clean history and the right safety equipment.
