CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 245 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,681.00, 29.8% of 2014 Tesla Model Ss for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Tesla Model S 4.17 / 5 stars.
79.6% of 2014 Model S models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Tesla Model S stands out as one of the cars that helped define the modern electric vehicle. It arrived with a minimalist interior, a large 17-inch infotainment screen, and an exterior shape guided more by aerodynamics than fashion. It also offered more than 200 miles of EV range, which was a major benchmark at the time, and its long wheelbase and clever packaging gave it generous interior space. For buyers, that combination of futuristic design, usable range, and everyday practicality is a big part of the appeal.
What makes the 2014 model especially distinctive is how much technology Tesla packed into it. The standard touchscreen controlled climate, entertainment, and vehicle functions, and the car lacked a stop/start button, instead turning on when the driver sat down and pressed the brake. It also came with heated front seats, leatherette seating surfaces, power-adjustable front seats, two USB ports, and unlimited free supercharging at the Tesla Supercharger network. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with “Insane” acceleration became available toward the end of the year, adding to the Model S’s performance reputation.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The buying guide notes that the Model S does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and it also mentions poor build quality and a weird steering yoke in some models. Even so, the 2014 Tesla Model S remains appealing because it combines strong performance, advanced technology, and the kind of electric range that made it a standout when it was new.

If this is not your primary vehicle, you will love it. If it needs services from Tesla you might have to wait a bit. Road handling and cabin is solid. That’s why overall it is a great second car or have a second car as a back up.

The car was great, everything I wanted. When it came down to it, it was a little outside my budget. But the car was outstanding. Low miles, no damage, premium leather seats, great sound system. Definitely a good buy.

Takes a while to learn all the capabilities. The car is continually improved via software downloads. The buying experience and driving experience is outstanding. Brakes should last 300,000 miles due to regenerative braking. The fuel cost (electricity) is about 25% of the gasoline cost to drive the same number of miles.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,674 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,811.14 |
| Year-Round High | $15,964.45 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,969 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.85% |
Prices have softened 1.85% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 243 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,811.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Tesla Model S a good car?
Generally — the 4.17/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the outstanding performance, modern features, premium sound system, and luxurious interior, while also appreciating the low operating costs that come with electric driving. The model also fits well if you want a luxury EV with usable range and everyday practicality, especially as a second car or as a premium option at a fair price. With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to dependable day-to-day electric driving and a car that many buyers feel good about keeping for the long term. At the same time, service availability and pricing can be a concern, so used buyers should think carefully about ownership support and maintenance access. For you, that means the car can make sense as a long-term choice, but only if you’re comfortable with the service side of EV ownership.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus your inspection on overall condition and signs of prior damage or repair. Because this model is technology-heavy, make sure every major system works as expected and that the car presents cleanly inside and out. A careful pre-purchase inspection matters most on examples that look inexpensive relative to the market.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Tesla Model S?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 243 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.85% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 79.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,811.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $15,674 sits slightly below last year's $15,969.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition so you preserve as much value as possible. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a used Model S with strong owner approval, a meaningful inventory pool, and a softer price trend, the 2014 is a sensible primary target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you should still compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than chasing the lowest sticker alone.
