CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 241 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,193, 25.7% of 2014 Tesla Model Ss for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Tesla Model S 4.17 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Tesla Model S stands out because it helped define what a modern electric luxury sedan could be. It arrived with more than 200 miles of EV range, a minimalist interior, and an exterior shaped more by aerodynamics than fashion. It also brought a huge 17-inch infotainment screen, long-wheelbase packaging that created generous interior space, and rear-wheel drive at launch. For buyers, that combination made it feel futuristic in a way few cars of its era could match.
What makes the 2014 model especially distinctive is how much technology Tesla had already packed into it. The car offered heated front seats, leatherette seating surfaces, a seven-speaker 200-watt audio system, power-adjustable front seats, two USB ports, and unlimited free supercharging at the Tesla Supercharger network. It also lacked a stop/start button and instead powered on when the driver sat down and pressed the brake, which was novel at the time. Toward the end of 2014, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with “Insane” acceleration became available, adding another layer of performance appeal.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Model S is praised for impressive range, advanced technology, and sports car-style acceleration, but it also lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and build quality is a known weak point. Even so, the 2014 Tesla Model S remains appealing because it combines early EV innovation with strong performance and a cabin that still feels ahead of its time.

If this is not your primary vehicle, you will love it. If it needs services from Tesla you might have to wait a bit. Road handling and cabin is solid. That’s why overall it is a great second car or have a second car as a back up.

The car was great, everything I wanted. When it came down to it, it was a little outside my budget. But the car was outstanding. Low miles, no damage, premium leather seats, great sound system. Definitely a good buy.

Takes a while to learn all the capabilities. The car is continually improved via software downloads. The buying experience and driving experience is outstanding. Brakes should last 300,000 miles due to regenerative braking. The fuel cost (electricity) is about 25% of the gasoline cost to drive the same number of miles.

How much does the 2014 Tesla Model S cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,192 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,807 |
| Year-Round High | $15,744 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,922 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.81% |
Prices are up 1.81% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 242 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2014 Tesla Model S a good car?
Generally — the 4.17/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the outstanding performance, modern features, premium sound system, and luxurious interior, while also appreciating the low operating costs that come with electric driving. The overview also shows why this model appeals to you if you want a futuristic luxury EV with generous interior space and a tech-forward cabin. With 24.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that many drivers find reliable in the sense of being dependable for everyday use and worth counting on, especially when you value low operating costs and long-term ownership appeal. At the same time, some owners mention service availability and pricing concerns, so used buyers should think carefully about maintenance access and the condition of the specific car they choose. For you, that means the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about the driving experience and more about how well the vehicle has been maintained and supported.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still prioritize a history report and confirm the car’s accident record, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a vehicle-by-vehicle check. Put inspection effort into overall condition, especially signs of wear, repair quality, and anything that suggests the car has been used hard or neglected. Since this model is known for advanced technology and a premium cabin, make sure the features you care about work properly and match the listing description.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Tesla Model S?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can buy now if the right listing appears, but you should still compare carefully and avoid rushing.
- Deal availability: 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 242 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.81% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 75.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,807, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $15,192 sits slightly above last year's $14,922.
That modest increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A stable-to-rising price trend can help support your exit value, especially if you buy a well-kept example at a fair price. For you, the key is to avoid overpaying now so you preserve more room for resale later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.81% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the earliest version of this model year’s modern EV appeal, the 2014 is a strong place to start, especially if you value performance, low operating costs, and a tech-forward cabin. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, history, and asking price.
