CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Legacy
overall

Summary
With 430 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,792, 30.2% of 2014 Subaru Legacies for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Legacy stands out as a practical family sedan that emphasizes substance over style. It may not be the prettiest four-door car, but it earns attention for fuel economy, safety, comfort, quality, and its ability to handle harsh weather. It is also described as fun to drive and a good value, which gives it a broader appeal than its understated appearance might suggest.
Its 4-cylinder engine may not look impressive on paper, but the CVT is said to make the most of its horsepower and torque, and the 2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i rarely feels underpowered in real-world driving. That combination helps explain why the car can feel more capable than its specifications imply. For buyers who want a dependable sedan that is comfortable, efficient, and confident in difficult conditions, the 2014 Subaru Legacy has a clear identity.
At the same time, it is not the most modern-feeling choice, and some drivers note that it lacks certain tech features found in competitors. Even so, its strengths in safety, comfort, reliability, and winter-friendly confidence make it appealing to shoppers who value everyday usefulness over flash.

I Love this car, my favorite color and drives so smooth and can't say enough how much room there is.

Reviewed a 2014 Subaru 2.5i Premium AWD on Sep 9, 2013
When I started researching fuel-efficient all wheel drive vehicles, the Subaru Legacy was at the top of the list. I live in the Northeast, and drive about 40 miles each way (mostly highway) to and from work, and during the winter months, I need AWD. I test drove the 2014 Subaru Legacy and immediately loved that it handles like a sports car, not like an SUV. I also like the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which makes for a smooth ride and acceleration. But most of all, love the money it will be saving me at the pump! I needed to make sure that it was reliable and safe, so after some additional research, took delivery on my first red car!

I have always heard extremely terrific reviews of Subaru’s, from safety, comfort and milage. These cars last FOREVER! And in my experience, they are not an overly priced car.

How can you go wrong with an all wheel drive car that is always at the top of the charts when it comes to safety and reliability for under $24,000? Do you get all of the technological bells and whistles as some of the other cars in its class? No. But if you just want a solid car that has decent gas mileage, is great in bad weather and can be had for a decent price, then this is the car for you.

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its safety, comfort, and reliability, and many also like the all-wheel drive setup for winter driving. Fuel efficiency is another recurring plus, and the car’s practical, value-focused character fits shoppers who want everyday usefulness over flash. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to find a strong-value example.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels reliable, dependable, and well suited to long-term ownership, with many drivers saying they feel confident counting on it day to day. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Legacy isn’t expected to cost much to own over the long run, and it highlights strong reliability marks from major consumer sources. If you’re shopping used, the main risk is less about the model’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by age or mileage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is valued for comfort, safety, and all-weather confidence, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is more likely to deliver the ownership experience you want. Pay close attention to how the car drives, how the cabin holds up, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i is the entry point, while the 2.5i Premium adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a better stereo with HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an iPod connection, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The 2.5i Sport adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, fake carbon fiber dashboard trim, a power sunroof, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with a Homelink universal garage door opener. The 2.5i Limited adds leather seats, woodgrain trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system. The 2.5i Premium is the best-value trim for most shoppers.
- Powertrain: Most models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. The 3.6R Limited uses a 6-cylinder engine with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The CVT is described as making the most of the 4-cylinder’s output and improving fuel economy, while the 3.6R uses a 5-speed automatic.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
- Infotainment: Subaru’s Starlink technology is included with the optional navigation system. The system pairs easily with a phone and supports calls and music streaming, but it lacks natural voice recognition and the touchscreen can be unresponsive.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i model is rated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined.
Which 2014 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is offered in 5 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry trim, and it’s the one to choose if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the most basic equipment.
- 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the CVT, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and a stronger audio and convenience package without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- 2.5i Sport: Choose this if you want the most distinctive look, with 18-inch wheels, fog lights, and a sunroof, but note that it does not get EyeSight.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the comfort-focused choice, with leather, dual-zone climate control, and the premium Harman Kardon audio system, and it can also be equipped with EyeSight.
- 3.6R Limited: Pick this only if you want the 6-cylinder engine and extra power, since it sits at the top of the lineup.
EyeSight is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 421 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.76% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,194, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $8,789 sits slightly below last year's $9,039.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. Strong value positioning and steady demand can help support resale, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Subaru Legacy safe?
The 2014 Subaru Legacy earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning. It is available on the 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited, but not on the 2.5i Sport. One caveat worth noting is the three-star rating in the NHTSA side-impact pole test, which is a reminder to check the full safety picture rather than relying on the headline score alone.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 stands out for its strong value, safety, comfort, and all-weather confidence.
Consider the 2015 if:
- The redesign brings a bigger cabin and nicer accommodations.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain and don’t mind the older design, the 2014 is the smarter buy. If you’d rather pay more for a roomier, more modern-feeling Legacy, the 2015 is the better path. For price-sensitive shoppers, the 2014’s softer pricing and strong owner satisfaction make it the more compelling value play.
