How much does the 2014 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 3.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,803 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 4.58/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its spaciousness, reliability, enjoyable driving experience, smooth ride, and great fuel economy. That lines up well with the Forester’s practical, high-riding crossover setup, especially if you want a versatile 5-passenger vehicle that handles bad weather with confidence. Even so, some owners note that certain lower trims feel less solid, and a few mention leather-seat durability and missing navigation in some models.

With 31.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively for the right combination of value and equipment.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.58/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to reliability as one of the Forester’s core strengths, alongside its spaciousness and enjoyable driving experience. The expert test-drive notes also emphasize that Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive confidently handles mud, sand, ice, rain, and snow, which supports the sense that this is a vehicle you can count on in rough weather. The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that it is a useful, capable crossover for the money, with standard features that make ownership feel worthwhile.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the drivetrain concept and more about finding a well-kept example with the right maintenance history and condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, interior wear, and any signs that the vehicle has been used hard or repaired poorly. Because some owners mention trim-level quality differences and seat durability concerns, condition matters as much as mileage on this model.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i starts with a simpler setup, while the 2.5i Premium adds a massive sunroof and roof rails. The XT trims bring larger 18-inch wheels and a more aggressive front-end appearance, so you should decide whether you want the more basic practical setup or the better-equipped versions.
• Powertrain: The 2.5i trims use a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or an available CVT. If you want more punch, the 2.0XT trims use a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is an optional package on most trims, using cameras and sensors to warn you about lane departure or an imminent crash. Standard safety equipment includes 7 airbags, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution.
• Infotainment: The Premium trim’s touchscreen handles stereo and navigation, plus AM/FM/XM satellite radio and Bluetooth streaming audio. The system is criticized for small icons and awkward operation, and the microphone quality for calls is also a weak point.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i with a 6-speed manual is rated at 22/29/24 mpg, the test model is rated at 24/32/27 mpg, and the turbo XT trims return 23/28/25 mpg.

Which 2014 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2014 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0XT Premium, 2.0XT Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the simplest entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Forester’s core all-weather capability without paying for extras. It gives you the basic formula that defines the model, but you should expect a more stripped-down experience than the higher trims.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a massive sunroof, roof rails, and the touchscreen interface with stereo and navigation. If you want the most useful mix of equipment and price, this is the trim to focus on.
• 2.0XT Premium: Choose this if you want stronger acceleration and the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, plus X-Mode for more inclement terrain. It suits you best if performance matters more than keeping costs down.
• 2.0XT Touring: This is the most upscale version in the lineup, combining the turbo powertrain with the highest equipment level. It makes sense if you want the most feature-rich Forester and are willing to pay for it.

Subaru EyeSight is optional on most trims, so check whether a specific listing includes that safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,803 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.67% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 64.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,519, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $9,826 sits slightly below last year's $10,200.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move a used Forester quickly. The current range still shows healthy demand, especially for clean examples with the right equipment and condition. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in good shape, you should have a reasonable path to resale later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.58/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It earns a strong safety reputation from its standard 7 airbags, reinforced safety structure, vehicle dynamics control, antilock brakes, and electronic brakeforce distribution. Subaru EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses cameras and sensors to warn you if you drift out of your lane or if a crash is imminent. That system is optional on most trims, so you should verify whether a specific used listing includes it.

Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.58/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 redesign adds more styling flair and keeps the Forester’s strong all-weather capability.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,266, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $9,826 average.
• It adds stronger safety recognition and a value-focused reputation.

The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2014 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and the model still delivers the Forester’s core strengths. If you can stretch for a newer example and want to prioritize safety recognition and a slightly fresher market position, the 2015 is the better alternative.
