Is the 2014 Nissan Frontier a good car?

Generally — the 2014 Nissan Frontier earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Drivers commonly praise its reliability, good fuel economy, and decent interior design. The Frontier’s straightforward, work-ready character also fits buyers who want a small truck for weekend use, including surfing trips or off-roading excursions. At the same time, its appeal is more about simple capability than being a do-everything pickup.

Only 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to shop carefully to find the best value.

Is the 2014 Nissan Frontier reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to reliability, and the expert evaluation also describes favorable quality and reliability ratings. The Frontier’s dependable, workhorse personality is part of its appeal, especially if you want a truck that feels straightforward rather than complicated. The expert writeup also notes that the truck’s basic nature and long-running design contribute to its familiar, durable character.

If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is that condition and maintenance history matter a lot more than the badge itself, especially on trucks that may have been worked hard or modified.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Nissan Frontier?

At 63.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, off-roading, or heavy hauling. Focus on body condition, signs of prior damage or neglect, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the asking price. Because value concerns show up in owner feedback, condition should carry extra weight in your decision.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Frontier S is the most basic setup, with a 4-cylinder engine, manual transmission, and 15-inch steel wheels, while the SV adds 16-inch alloy wheels, power accessories, a tilt steering wheel, a 4.3-inch color radio display, satellite radio, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The Desert Runner adds special styling, fog lights, Bilstein shock absorbers, and off-road tires, while the PRO-4X adds locking rear differential and underbody skid plates. The SL adds 18-inch alloy wheels and side steps, but drops the off-roading equipment.
• Powertrain: You can equip a Frontier with a 4- or 6-cylinder engine and rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive in various configurations. The 4-cylinder setup is the more basic choice, while the V6 brings stronger capability and is paired with the truck’s more serious off-road and towing-oriented versions.
• Safety package: The Frontier includes antilock brakes, stability control, a limited-slip differential, rear parking sensors, and a back-up camera. The PRO-4X Luxury package adds features such as a sunroof, a roof rack with cross bars, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and a NissanConnect infotainment system with smartphone pairing capability.
• Infotainment: The optional NissanConnect system includes Bluetooth smartphone pairing with streaming audio, a text-messaging assistant, live traffic updates, gas prices at nearby stations, mobile applications, navigation, voice commands, a USB port, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The touchscreen is rather small and can suffer from sun glare.
• Fuel efficiency: The Frontier is described as getting terrible gas mileage, and the expert test vehicle returned about 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, for a combined 17 mpg. The standard 4-cylinder is noted as a possible alternative, but no better figure is stated here.

Which 2014 Nissan Frontier trim should I buy?

The 2014 Nissan Frontier is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SV, Desert Runner, PRO-4X and SL.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the most basic Frontier, so it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and can live with the simplest equipment. It’s the trim to consider if you care more about truck basics than comfort or convenience.
• SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the most useful everyday equipment, including alloy wheels, power accessories, a better display, satellite radio, and USB connectivity. If you want a balanced used Frontier, this is the one to start with.
• Desert Runner: Choose this if you want the rugged look and off-road flavor without going all the way to the most specialized model. It adds styling changes, fog lights, Bilstein shocks, and off-road tires.
• PRO-4X: This is the trim for serious off-road ambitions, with off-road tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and underbody skid plates. It’s the right pick if trail use matters more than everyday comfort.
• SL: This trim is the more comfort-oriented choice, with most of the PRO-4X Luxury package content but without the off-road hardware. It adds 18-inch alloy wheels and side steps, so it suits you if you want a better-equipped Frontier without the trail-focused setup.

The safety content notes that the Frontier is fairly standard for safety-related technology, so trim choice is more about equipment and use case than major safety-package differences.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Nissan Frontier?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 428 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 63.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,043, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Nissan Frontier's resale value?

The current average of $13,246 sits slightly below last year's $13,829.

That softer pricing suggests the Frontier is not in a strong appreciation phase, so future sellers should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. If you buy well and keep the truck clean, you may be better positioned than the average seller because the market still rewards usable, well-kept examples. The truck’s lower running-price trend also means you should be realistic about how much value you can recover later.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Nissan Frontier safe?

The 2014 Nissan Frontier earns a Good rating from IIHS for moderate overlap frontal impact, side impact and roof crush protection, and an Acceptable rating for rear-impact seat and head restraint protection. It also earns a four-star rating from NHTSA for rollover resistance on 4WD models, while RWD models get a three-star rating.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety equipment is fairly standard and includes antilock brakes, stability control, a limited-slip differential, rear parking sensors, and a back-up camera. The Frontier does not bring the advanced driver-assistance technology you’ll find in newer full-size trucks, so you should not expect a modern safety suite here. If safety is a top priority, pay close attention to trim and drivetrain, since the rollover rating differs between 4WD and RWD models.

Should I buy a 2014 Nissan Frontier or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• For a good time, call F-R-O-N-T-I-E-R. For more utility and flexibility, call a full-size truck. The Frontier may work perfectly for weekend surfers or off-roading excursions, but it comes up short for those who need to haul lots of stuff lots of the time.

The bottom line: If you want a simple, capable small truck and you can live with its compromises, the 2014 Frontier is the better path. If your priority is maximum utility, stronger value, or more everyday versatility, you should also consider a full-size truck or shop carefully for a cleaner, better-priced example.
