Is the 2014 Kia Soul a good car?

Yes — the 2014 Kia Soul earns a 4.71/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the smooth driving experience, fuel efficiency, and spacious interior. They also frequently call out the sound system and advanced features, which fits the Soul’s role as a practical hatchback with extra personality. For you, that means this model year makes the most sense if you want everyday usefulness with a more distinctive feel than a typical compact commuter.

The market also shows 29.6% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile listings if you shop carefully.

Is the 2014 Kia Soul reliable?

The owner feedback points to a car that still runs well even when reviews mention minor cosmetic issues such as dents. The expert notes also frame the Soul as a solid value with useful standard equipment, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable daily driver when maintained properly. Its straightforward gasoline powertrain and practical feature set should make ownership manageable for most used buyers.

For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is less about the car’s personality and more about finding one that has been cared for consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Kia Soul?

At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because some owners mention cosmetic issues while still saying the cars run well, condition matters a lot here: a clean-running Soul can still hide wear that affects value. If possible, focus on examples with complete maintenance records and no signs of unresolved accident damage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gives you the essentials, including a multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, and USB/auxiliary audio inputs. The Plus adds mirror-mounted LED turn signals, remote keyless entry, and 17-inch alloy wheels, while the Exclaim brings 18-inch alloys, a backup camera, UVO connectivity services, and a chilled glovebox. If you want the best value, the Plus is the most balanced step up from the base model.
• Powertrain: The base trim uses a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder with 130 hp, while the Plus and Exclaim use a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 164 hp. The smaller engine returns 24 mpg city and 30 highway, and the larger engine returns 23 mpg city and 31 highway. Neither setup is quick, but the 6-speed automatic manages power reasonably well.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, electronic brakeforce distribution, a tire pressure monitoring system, side impact door beams, and front and rear crumple zones. Uprated models feature a backup camera.
• Infotainment: All trims come with USB/auxiliary jacks, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and a 6-speaker audio system with A-pillar-mounted tweeters. The optional navigation system uses an 8-inch touchscreen and voice control.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 24 mpg city and 30 highway, while the 2.0-liter engine returns 23 mpg city and 31 highway.

Which 2014 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2014 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Plus (+), and Exclaim (!).

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want standard Bluetooth, satellite radio, and USB/aux inputs. It makes the most sense if you care more about affordability than extra convenience features.
• Plus (+): This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds remote keyless entry, 17-inch alloy wheels, and mirror-mounted LED turn signals without jumping all the way to the top trim. It also gets the stronger 2.0-liter engine.
• Exclaim (!): Choose this if you want the most equipment, including 18-inch alloys, a backup camera, UVO connectivity services, and a chilled glovebox. It is the most feature-rich version, but it is best for buyers who specifically want the extras.

The safety content notes that all models include a strong standard safety foundation, while uprated models add a backup camera.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Kia Soul?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping.

• Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 879 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.42% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $6,824, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $6,938 sits slightly below last year's $7,184.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now and keep the car in clean condition, you may be better positioned to limit depreciation later. The Soul’s broad appeal as a practical, distinctive hatchback should help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Kia Soul safe?

The 2014 Kia Soul earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, electronic brakeforce distribution, a tire pressure monitoring system, side impact door beams, and front and rear crumple zones. Uprated models add a backup camera, while the upright design also helps visibility.

That said, the safety content emphasizes the backup camera as an upgrade rather than a universal feature, so you should confirm the exact equipment on any used listing you consider.

Should I buy a 2014 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 stands out for its tech-rich cabin and distinctive redesign.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,816, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $6,938 average.
• It adds more power, extra trunk space, and a few additional safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and standout technology. If you can stretch for the next year and want a newer-feeling package with more power and a few added features, the 2015 is the better upgrade path.
