Why it stands out
The 2014 Hyundai Elantra stands out as part of the fifth-generation car’s broad, style-forward approach to the compact segment. That generation first turned heads for the 2011 model year with its flowing design and fastback silhouette, and Hyundai offered the widest range of body styles in the Elantra’s history during this era. For buyers, that meant a small car that tried to deliver more personality than the typical economy sedan, while still keeping the Elantra’s long-running reputation for value in view.
For 2014 specifically, the Elantra’s standard engine was a 148-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder paired with a manual or automatic transmission. Hyundai also added a more powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder that made 173 hp in 2014, giving shoppers a stronger option within the same generation. Fuel economy ranged from 27 to 31 mpg combined, and the car earned good safety marks, though it did not collect quite as many IIHS Top Safety Pick awards as the sixth generation that followed.
The tradeoffs are worth noting. This version of the Elantra has a mixed reliability record, with some sources rating it average and others placing it among the weakest Elantra generations since 2000. The 2012 and 2013 models drew especially sharp criticism for a wide range of complaints, and those years were also among the most theft-vulnerable Elantras. Even so, the 2014 Elantra remains appealing as a stylish, affordable compact with decent equipment, respectable efficiency, and the kind of everyday practicality that helped the nameplate become one of Hyundai’s core offerings.

Reviewed a 2014 Hyundai Sport FWD on Mar 31, 2014
On friday I decided, after an exhausting search for a new car for the wifey, on a new 2014 Elantra Sport. My initial thoughts after the first 50 miles are that this is a car that can stick around in our family for a while. Excellent safety ratings, excellent gas mileage (we sold a Jeep Wrangler for this so ANYTHING is better) and a lot of fun for me to drive (when the misses gives me a chance. :) ) My first impression of this car went straight to the finish and body lines. It's obvious the Elantra is the little brother to the Sonata. The Sport package we selected is the most limited on color ranges so we opted for the Titan Gray with Gray/Black interior. When clean, this color is STUNNING. Very deep, dark color in the shade and when the sun strikes it, the color just pops. The finish work is well executed with no noticable overspray or edge drip to be found. As for the body itself, the lines are agressive and lean. I find the design to be well executed and quite attractive aside form the very front nose where the front licenseplate area seems a bit clumsy. After the lines of the body come the wheels. The stock wheel is above average in looks and the paired with each tim level as appropriate. This car has a lot of upgraded quality for an affordable price. I found the overall hands-on quality to be just as nice and solid as the Sonata (made in Georgia) even though it's final assembly is in Korea. The looks are that of a lean bicept, and the performance matches that in a powerful quick twitch fashion. Now, this car is no hotrod, but that little 2.0l four can get you going in a hurry. Since the car is still going through it's break-in period, I havent really put it through the gauntlet yet, but after driving it to the store a few times and taking it across town once, its quick for sure. The selectable automatic is great when you want a little more hands on driving and that "pin you to the seat feeling." The standard 6 speed auto is a great 'mate for this motor and the selectable shifting is a wonderful cost free addition. I think Hyundai did a great job with this drivet train and I'm anxiously awating our first road trip in this car. The interior is one of the major picking points for me in automobiles, and this one asthetically is nice, maybe. Again, comparing to the Sonata, it's very close in design although somewhat lacking in execution. The Sport package comes with bluetooth, rearview camera, satellite radio and a small internal storage headunit. The audio performance in this car is very average, if not poor (to be fair, I only used the bluetooth connection for media playback so far, so that could be the issue) and the satellite radio/media storage system is not very user friendly. The audio system paired easily with my iphone 5 and automatically synced my contacts for reference. The one major issue I have with the interior and cabin of this car seems to be the fact that every surface of this vehicle scratches/get's dirty very easily. We looked through three identical units on the sales floor and every single one of them had issues off the lot. We just picked the cleanest of the three and hoped that we could keep this car looking decent through the weekend. We have already planned to have the headliner cleaned professionally and scotchguarded for the future. Families with small children/dogs beware. I'm already leary of putting our two small dogs in the car. Only time will tell if it's a warranted concern. Overall, I'm excited about this car and am deeply reminded of our early 2000's Ford Focus we so loved. The build quality is great, the drivability is really great and it's very well equipped for the price. So far, we have no regrets about this purchase and we are looking forward to our future with it.

Love it! It is exactly what I was looking for. I definitely feel like i got a great deal. I would compare this car to a Kia Rio. It is a small car that is good on gas. Perfect for everyday local commute.

How much does the 2014 Hyundai Elantra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $7,247 |
| Year-Round Low | $7,228 |
| Year-Round High | $7,744 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $7,537 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.86% |
Prices have softened 3.86% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 860 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2014 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — 4.83/5 is a strong user rating, and owners consistently praise its dependability, comfort, and fuel efficiency. Reviewers also frequently mention its great value for money, smooth ride, and user-friendly technology like seat warmers and backup cameras. If you want a stylish, affordable compact that emphasizes everyday practicality, this model year fits that use case well. With 28.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to dependability, and many drivers describe the car as trouble-free enough to recommend for daily use. That said, some buyers note concerns with the audio system and interior wear, so long-term ownership risk is more about condition and maintenance history than broad owner dissatisfaction.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Hyundai Elantra?
At 53.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and interior wear, especially if the car has seen family use or heavy daily commuting.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep discounts on every listing.

- Inventory: There are 860 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.86% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,228, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $7,247 sits slightly below last year's $7,537.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers avoid the steepest early losses. The current market also shows enough inventory to keep pricing competitive, so condition and history will matter a lot when you eventually resell. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with clean records.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.86% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,766, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,247 average.
- It adds a more mainstream value feel with generous space and useful features.
The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and a solid satisfaction record, the 2014 is the better value play. If you can spend more for a newer-feeling alternative with a stronger mainstream appeal, the 2015 is worth a look. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2014 makes the most sense when you find a clean, well-maintained example.
