CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Summary
With 816 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,692.00, 26.5% of 2014 Hyundai Elantras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Hyundai Elantra 4.83 / 5 stars.
54.2% of 2014 Elantra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Hyundai Elantra stands out as part of the fifth-generation car’s move from bargain-basement transportation toward a more polished compact sedan. By this point, Hyundai had already made the Elantra a more serious contender, and the model’s appeal rested on a mix of style, value, and everyday usability. It was also one of the more distinctive Elantras visually, with the generation’s flowing design and fastback-like shape helping it get noticed even if reactions to the styling were mixed.
For 2014, Hyundai added a more powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder that made 173 hp, giving buyers a stronger alternative to the standard engine. The car also offered fuel economy of 27 to 31 mpg combined, which helped preserve the Elantra’s reputation as an efficient commuter. Safety was another strength, since this generation earned good marks for safety, though it did not collect as many IIHS Top Safety Pick awards as the next generation.
The 2014 Elantra is also appealing because it was available in a wide range of body styles for this generation, including a sedan, coupe, and hatchback. At the same time, it was not without drawbacks: the generation has a mixed reliability record, and complaints have centered on areas such as electrical and HVAC systems, suspensions, engines, brakes, and overall build quality. Even so, its combination of value, efficiency, and a more upscale look than earlier Elantras makes it a compelling used compact for shoppers who want a practical car with a little more personality.

Reviewed a 2014 Hyundai Sport FWD on Mar 31, 2014
On friday I decided, after an exhausting search for a new car for the wifey, on a new 2014 Elantra Sport. My initial thoughts after the first 50 miles are that this is a car that can stick around in our family for a while. Excellent safety ratings, excellent gas mileage (we sold a Jeep Wrangler for this so ANYTHING is better) and a lot of fun for me to drive (when the misses gives me a chance. :) ) My first impression of this car went straight to the finish and body lines. It's obvious the Elantra is the little brother to the Sonata. The Sport package we selected is the most limited on color ranges so we opted for the Titan Gray with Gray/Black interior. When clean, this color is STUNNING. Very deep, dark color in the shade and when the sun strikes it, the color just pops. The finish work is well executed with no noticable overspray or edge drip to be found. As for the body itself, the lines are agressive and lean. I find the design to be well executed and quite attractive aside form the very front nose where the front licenseplate area seems a bit clumsy. After the lines of the body come the wheels. The stock wheel is above average in looks and the paired with each tim level as appropriate. This car has a lot of upgraded quality for an affordable price. I found the overall hands-on quality to be just as nice and solid as the Sonata (made in Georgia) even though it's final assembly is in Korea. The looks are that of a lean bicept, and the performance matches that in a powerful quick twitch fashion. Now, this car is no hotrod, but that little 2.0l four can get you going in a hurry. Since the car is still going through it's break-in period, I havent really put it through the gauntlet yet, but after driving it to the store a few times and taking it across town once, its quick for sure. The selectable automatic is great when you want a little more hands on driving and that "pin you to the seat feeling." The standard 6 speed auto is a great 'mate for this motor and the selectable shifting is a wonderful cost free addition. I think Hyundai did a great job with this drivet train and I'm anxiously awating our first road trip in this car. The interior is one of the major picking points for me in automobiles, and this one asthetically is nice, maybe. Again, comparing to the Sonata, it's very close in design although somewhat lacking in execution. The Sport package comes with bluetooth, rearview camera, satellite radio and a small internal storage headunit. The audio performance in this car is very average, if not poor (to be fair, I only used the bluetooth connection for media playback so far, so that could be the issue) and the satellite radio/media storage system is not very user friendly. The audio system paired easily with my iphone 5 and automatically synced my contacts for reference. The one major issue I have with the interior and cabin of this car seems to be the fact that every surface of this vehicle scratches/get's dirty very easily. We looked through three identical units on the sales floor and every single one of them had issues off the lot. We just picked the cleanest of the three and hoped that we could keep this car looking decent through the weekend. We have already planned to have the headliner cleaned professionally and scotchguarded for the future. Families with small children/dogs beware. I'm already leary of putting our two small dogs in the car. Only time will tell if it's a warranted concern. Overall, I'm excited about this car and am deeply reminded of our early 2000's Ford Focus we so loved. The build quality is great, the drivability is really great and it's very well equipped for the price. So far, we have no regrets about this purchase and we are looking forward to our future with it.

Love it! It is exactly what I was looking for. I definitely feel like i got a great deal. I would compare this car to a Kia Rio. It is a small car that is good on gas. Perfect for everyday local commute.

How much does the 2014 Hyundai Elantra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $7,730 |
| Year-Round Low | $7,233.04 |
| Year-Round High | $7,928.09 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $7,874 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.83% |
Prices have softened 1.83% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 815 listings available, which suggests a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $7,233.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.83/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Review feedback repeatedly highlights dependability, comfort, and fuel efficiency, along with good value for money. For you, that makes the 2014 Elantra a sensible pick if you want a practical compact sedan with a polished feel, useful features, and everyday livability. With 24.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still opportunities to find a well-priced example.
Is the 2014 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Review feedback specifically points to dependability and a car that many owners feel they can count on over time. The same feedback also emphasizes comfort and fuel efficiency, which usually matters most when you plan to keep a used car for the long haul. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is making sure you choose a well-maintained example, since condition can vary widely from one listing to the next.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Hyundai Elantra?
At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car shows signs of uneven wear, electrical issues, or interior neglect. Focus your condition check on the areas owners mention most often, including the audio system, interior surfaces, and overall upkeep.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 815 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.83% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,233.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $7,730 sits slightly below last year's $7,874.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. Clean, well-kept examples should hold up better than average because buyers still respond to the model’s value and efficiency.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,912, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,730 average.
- It adds a more mainstream value focus with generous space and useful features.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the stronger starting point because pricing has softened and owner satisfaction is high. If you're willing to pay more for a slightly newer alternative, the 2015 is the better secondary path for price-sensitive buyers who want to compare nearby options before deciding.
