CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 1,809 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,520.00, 28.5% of 2014 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Explorer 4.5 / 5 stars.
60.8% of 2014 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that had already moved well beyond its truck-based roots by this point. In the fifth generation, it was built on Ford’s D4 platform and described as a family-friendly crossover, with front-wheel drive behavior in most cases and all-wheel drive available as a side benefit. That shift gave the Explorer a more car-like feel than earlier versions, while still preserving the roomy, practical character that made the nameplate popular in the first place.
For 2014, the Explorer also benefited from a styling and technology refresh, and this model year was the first to get Ford’s SYNC system. It could be equipped with useful features such as heated and ventilated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and safety equipment included dual front airbags, dual front-seat side-impact airbags, dual rear safety belt airbags, and side curtain head, torso, and rollover protection airbags. Available safety tech also included BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, automatic high beams, Roll Stability Control, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers.
What makes the 2014 Explorer appealing is the way it blends everyday usefulness with a broad range of equipment. Owners commonly praise its comfort, space, performance, stylish design, and value for money. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the generation’s reliability record is mixed, and some buyers may find maintenance costs and room for larger passengers less satisfying than they hoped.

The Ford Explorer is the best vehicle I have ever owned . I like to buy american also looked at the Lincoln MKX which was noisy in comparison . I believe Lincoln has become an over priced Ford . Go with the Explorer if you are looking for an SUV

Reviewed a 2014 Ford Sport 4WD on Jan 12, 2015
After driving the new Ford Explorer sport for the first time about six months ago, it has to be the best SUV on the market. The performance of the 3.5L twin turbo 365 HP engine is second to none. The cab is nicely appointed, very comfortable and outside sound is minimal. The styling is low and lean and with the all black grill the overall appeal is outstanding. At 16MPG city, the gas mileage could be improved a bit, but you have to give up MPG for that kind of HP. This SUV is great to drive as you feel sturdy and solid in it, yet the nimble steering and responsive suspension make you feel in complete control. It will get wherever you want to go as fast as you want to go there, but keeps you in control and can also get you out of any situation needed.

How much does the 2014 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,476 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,322.70 |
| Year-Round High | $10,198.12 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,200 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.10% |
Prices have softened 7.10% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,843 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $9,322.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Ford Explorer earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners most often praise its comfort, space, and performance, and they also call out its stylish design and value for money. That makes it a sensible fit if you want a family-friendly midsize SUV with a practical cabin and a broad equipment list.
Given its crossover-oriented setup and everyday usability, it makes the most sense if you want a roomy, versatile SUV rather than something focused on ruggedness. 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a mix of confidence and caution: many drivers describe it as comfortable and dependable in daily use, while some note concerns about maintenance costs and higher-mileage examples. That combination suggests you should expect the best ownership experience from a well-kept truck with documented service history.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is ending up with a neglected example, so condition and maintenance records matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage trucks where wear and deferred maintenance can show up more clearly.
Focus on overall condition, service history, and signs of previous repairs rather than just the asking price. A cleaner, better-documented example is usually the safer buy even if it costs a bit more upfront.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,843 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,322.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $9,476 sits slightly below last year's $10,200.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a particularly clean, well-maintained example. If you plan to sell later, condition, mileage, and service history will matter a lot in protecting value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2014 is a good choice if you want a value-oriented Explorer with strong owner approval and a softer market price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, this year can make sense as long as you focus on condition and history; if you want the cleanest possible ownership path, you may want to compare it carefully with nearby years and choose the best-documented example rather than the cheapest one.
