Is the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a vehicle that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially because of its spaciousness, feature content, and good gas mileage. The expert notes also describe it as a practical family crossover that can deliver meaningful savings off the sticker price, which helps offset average predicted reliability and cost-of-ownership ratings.

The performance write-up adds that the Traverse’s underlying structure remains stout, and the cost-effectiveness section notes free scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 24,000 miles. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some listings may carry the kind of wear, maintenance history, or transmission-related concerns that deserve close inspection before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Traverse?

At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident or repair history. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and signs of uneven use, since those can reveal whether the vehicle has been repaired well or simply patched up. It also makes sense to pay close attention to how the drivetrain feels on a test drive, given the owner feedback about possible transmission concerns.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LS is the simplest version, while the 1LT adds aluminum wheels, foglights, remote engine start, rear parking assist sensors, a front-center airbag, and nicer trim inside and out. The 2LT adds triple-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, a universal garage door opener, auto-dimming mirrors, a power rear liftgate, Chevrolet MyLink technology, and a Bose premium audio system. The LTZ brings leather seats, ventilated front seats, memory settings, a power passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, blind-zone alert, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, chrome trim, and 20-inch wheels.
• Powertrain: A 3.6-liter V6 makes between 281 and 288 horsepower depending on trim, paired with a 6-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard and AWD is optional, and the setup is described as strong enough to move the Traverse confidently even when loaded with passengers.
• Safety package: OnStar is standard, along with a reversing camera and automatic crash response, crisis assist, and emergency services. Rear parking assist sensors are included on the 1LT and 2LT, while forward collision alert and lane-departure warning are available on the LT2 and standard on the LTZ. Side blind-zone alert is standard only on the LTZ.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink uses a 6.5-inch color touchscreen and includes Bluetooth streaming audio, Internet radio access, phonebook contacts, and music libraries. A navigation system is available, and the rear-seat DVD system adds a single rear screen, wireless headphones, a Bose 5.1 Surround Sound audio system, and video-game input jacks.
• Fuel efficiency: The Traverse is described as more fuel-efficient than a traditional big SUV, and the expert test drive notes a weeklong average of 17.8 mpg in an AWD test vehicle, with an EPA estimate of 19 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2014 Chevrolet Traverse trim should I buy?

The 2014 Chevrolet Traverse is offered in 4 trim levels: LS, 1LT, 2LT and LTZ.

Here's the short version:

• LS: This is the simplest way into the Traverse, and it makes sense if you want the room and core capability without paying for extras. It also skips variable-effort power steering, which is included on the higher trims.
• 1LT: This is the first meaningful upgrade because it adds useful everyday equipment like aluminum wheels, foglights, remote start, rear parking assist sensors, and a front-center airbag. If you want the best balance of value and features, this is the trim to focus on.
• 2LT: Choose this if you want more comfort and convenience, especially triple-zone climate control, heated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, a power liftgate, MyLink, and the Bose audio system. It’s the better pick if you regularly carry family or want a more upscale cabin.
• LTZ: This is the most fully equipped version, with leather, ventilated front seats, memory settings, a heated steering wheel, blind-zone alert, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and 20-inch wheels. It suits you best if you want the most safety tech and luxury content in the lineup.

The safety package note is important here: side blind-zone alert is standard and available only on the LTZ trim level.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Traverse?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 729 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.49% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,233, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse's resale value?

The current average of $7,233 sits slightly below last year's $8,265.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Well-kept examples should still attract family buyers because the Traverse’s space and feature content remain strong selling points.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse safe?

The 2014 Chevrolet Traverse earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment except rollover resistance, for which it earns a four-star rating. The IIHS gives it its highest rating of Good in nearly every test, combined with a Basic front crash prevention rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera and OnStar services with automatic crash response, crisis assist, and emergency services. Rear parking assist sensors are included on the 1LT and 2LT, while forward collision alert and lane-departure warning are standard on the LTZ and available on the LT2. Side blind-zone alert is standard only on the LTZ, which leaves lower trims with fewer advanced driver-assistance features.

Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 stands out for its roomy cabin, strong safety focus, and dynamically satisfying driving feel, while still offering meaningful savings off the sticker price.

The bottom line: If you want a spacious three-row crossover with strong safety credentials and a lower entry price, the 2014 is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on well-kept examples with clean history and the features you care about most, since the market includes enough inventory to let you be selective.
