Why it stands out
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a midsize sedan that blends comfort, technology, and performance in a way that helped it earn attention beyond longtime Chevrolet loyalists. It is described as an efficient four-door, and its steering is a particular highlight: tight and sporty at higher speeds, yet light enough to make slow-speed maneuvering and parking easy.
That balance makes the Malibu appealing to buyers who want a sedan that feels composed without being demanding to drive. Owner feedback reinforces its strengths, with praise for excellent fuel economy, a quiet ride, and comfort for family trips. At the same time, some owners have raised concerns about warranty issues and the absence of certain features such as fog lights, so it is best viewed as a well-rounded choice with a few notable omissions.

Excellent car exactly what I want. Sorry about warranty issues.

I love all the car features not over whelming with controls nice and simple. 2.5 Inline 4 Cylinder feels like a 6 and excellent gas mileage. Come with a spoiler and a turn signal painted mirrors normally found on a LT model. Vehicle was a great value less than 10 Grand with 42k miles on it. Just missing fog lights easily can be added latter.

I like that the car has automatic stop when I am stopped for awhile that really helps on the gas. I like that it has automatic start for the cold winters. I also like the 2 year worry free maintenance on my car that saves me a lot of money.

Excellent all around quality. Quiet ride, responsive engine, great looking car. Great car with lots of room for long family trips and impressive gas mileage for a car this size. This is a very good quality car and is a joy to drive.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 51.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment you want is actually present, since some owners note missing features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level LS comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and cruise control. The 1LT adds the Chevrolet MyLink 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite radio service and voice-recognition technology, heated mirrors, and floor mats. The 2LT adds dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s power lumbar adjustment, and 18-inch alloys. The 1LTZ brings leather upholstery, unique alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and heated 8-way power-adjustable front seats. The 2LTZ adds a power moonroof and the upgraded engine. The best-value trim is the 1LT if you want the core tech and convenience upgrades without moving too far up the price ladder.
- Powertrain: The Malibu uses two distinct 4-cylinder powerplants and is strictly front-wheel drive. The base 2.5-liter engine makes 196 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a 6-speed automatic. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine makes 259 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, also with a 6-speed automatic, and it delivers stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: The Malibu’s safety equipment includes 10 standard airbags, with available rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. The Advanced Safety Package was available on the tested vehicle, and some of these features are not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: The MyLink system uses a 7-inch touchscreen on the 1LT and above, and it includes text-message reading and response, iPhone-specific Eyes Free mode, Pandora, Stitcher, and voice control. OnStar Directions & Connections is complimentary for the first 6 months of ownership.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The cost-effectiveness notes also call out the standard engine’s strong fuel economy for the class.
Which 2014 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 6 trim levels: LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 1LTZ, 2LTZ.
Here's the short version:
- LS: This is the simplest way into the Malibu, and it already gives you Bluetooth, OnStar, cruise control, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the car and can live without the nicer infotainment and comfort upgrades.
- 1LT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the MyLink 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, voice recognition, heated mirrors, and floor mats without jumping too far upmarket. If you want the most useful everyday upgrades, this is the trim to target first.
- 2LT: This trim adds a more upscale feel with dual-zone climate control, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power lumbar adjustment, and 18-inch alloys. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the price as low as possible.
- 3LT: This version is essentially a 2LT with a more powerful standard engine. Choose it if you want the stronger powertrain and are willing to pay more for it.
- 1LTZ: This is the premium-grade Malibu with leather upholstery, unique alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and heated 8-way power front seats. It fits you if you want a more upscale cabin without going all the way to the top.
- 2LTZ: This trim adds a power moonroof and the upgraded engine, making it the most fully equipped version described here. It’s the right pick if you want the strongest mix of performance and features.
The safety content also notes that the Malibu’s safety equipment includes available rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning, with some of those features not standard on every trim.

- Inventory: There are 752 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.45% compared with last year.

What is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $7,744 sits slightly below last year's $8,104.
That softer pricing suggests the Malibu has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and plan to keep it for a while. For a future seller, the current trend means you should expect a more value-oriented resale market rather than a strong appreciation story.
The good news is that the Malibu still has appeal as a comfortable, efficient midsize sedan with solid owner satisfaction. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu safe?
The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu earns an overall five-star rating from NHTSA and a best-possible Good ranking in all IIHS tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Malibu’s safety suite includes 10 standard airbags, with available rear-side airbags, side blind-zone alert, a rear-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. The tested vehicle also included forward-collision warning, and the review notes that it uses a combination of dash-top red lights and audible beeps.
That said, some of the more advanced safety features are not standard on every trim, so you should confirm exactly what the specific listing includes before you buy.
Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 24.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Expert or safety highlight specific to this year from the review: it combines comfort, technology, and performance in a way that helped it stand out, while also earning an overall five-star NHTSA rating and Good IIHS results.
The bottom line: The 2014 Malibu is the better choice if you want a comfortable, efficient midsize sedan with strong owner satisfaction and a market that currently favors careful shoppers. If your priority is a newer-feeling cabin or you want to compare broader powertrain and tech updates, a nearby model year may be worth cross-shopping, but the 2014 remains a sensible buy when the price and equipment line up.
