Is the 2014 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2014 BMW X5 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious feel, sporty handling, spaciousness, top-notch features, and good fuel economy. That lines up well with the X5’s role as a luxury SUV that still leans hard into driving enjoyment, especially if you want something more athletic than a typical family hauler. It also has broad appeal as a prestige SUV with strong utility and a well-developed feature set.

The market shows 32.5% of listings as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2014 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise centered on the X5’s strong performance, luxurious feel, and good fuel economy. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on it to deliver the premium experience buyers expect, especially if it has been maintained carefully. The expert notes also emphasize the X5’s solid build and well-rounded character, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.

One thing to watch on a used example is long-term upkeep, since premium SUVs can become costly if prior maintenance was inconsistent.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW X5?

At 57.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage examples or trucks with multiple owners. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, worn interior controls, and any evidence that maintenance has been deferred. Because this is a premium SUV with performance ambitions, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The sDrive35i is the least expensive choice and has the least amount of goodies, while the xDrive35i adds AWD and the xDrive35d brings diesel torque and strong highway fuel economy. The xDrive50i adds the V8 and the most performance, and the M Sport Line adds sportier steering, M Sport accents, the M Sport transmission, 19-inch wheels, and revised aerodynamic bodywork.
• Powertrain: You can choose a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 300 horsepower, a 3.0-liter diesel with 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, or a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The diesel is the efficiency-minded pick, while the V8 is the performance standout.
• Safety package: The X5 includes a wide-angle backup camera with directional guides and a full complement of front and side impact airbags. The large iDrive screen also supports split-screen viewing for navigation and vehicle menus.
• Infotainment: You get a 10.2-inch iDrive screen with rotary-dial control and joystick functionality. It handles audio, navigation, Bluetooth-connected phone functions, and touch-sensitive character entry.
• Fuel efficiency: The sDrive35i is listed at 19/27 mpg, the xDrive35i at 18/27 mpg, the xDrive35d at 23/31 mpg, and the xDrive50i at 14/22 mpg.

Which 2014 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2014 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, and xDrive50i.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive35i: This is the least expensive entry point, and it gives you the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 300 horsepower and rear-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without AWD.
• xDrive35i: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the same 300-hp engine but adds AWD. If you want the most balanced mix of traction, everyday usability, and price, this is the one to focus on.
• xDrive35d: This is the efficiency and torque choice, with the 3.0-liter diesel making 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. It also delivers the strongest fuel economy in the range, so it suits you if highway driving and towing matter.
• xDrive50i: This is the performance flagship, with the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, 445 horsepower, and 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Choose it if you want the most power and are willing to pay for it at the pump.

The M Sport Line adds sportier steering, M Sport accents, the M Sport transmission, 19-inch wheels, and revised aerodynamic bodywork.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW X5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 810 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.01% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,733, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $11,900 sits slightly below last year's $13,078.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing trend means you should expect some depreciation pressure unless the vehicle is especially clean, well-optioned, and well maintained. Strong condition and documented service history will matter more if you want to protect value.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 BMW X5 safe?

The 2014 BMW X5 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It includes a wide-angle backup camera with directional guides, a full complement of front and side impact airbags, and the large iDrive screen can help with visibility and vehicle-status monitoring. The safety content also highlights the screen’s split-display capability, which can keep navigation and other information visible at the same time.

One thing to keep in mind is that the safety equipment described here is helpful, but you should still verify the exact feature set on any used example, since equipment can vary by trim and options.

Should I buy a 2014 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.01% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It marks the first year of the third-generation X5, with a more elegant, stately design and a much improved iDrive setup.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,383, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $11,900 average.
• It keeps the X5’s sporty, utility-focused character while emphasizing BMW’s handling-first personality.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the stronger starting point because prices have softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2015 is the secondary path, but the 2014 already delivers the core X5 experience with strong owner satisfaction and broad trim choice.
