Is the 2014 BMW X5 reliable?

One ownership caveat is that some drivers note heavy oil usage, so a used example with incomplete service records deserves extra scrutiny.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW X5?

At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage examples or listings with incomplete maintenance records. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and electronics operate as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The sDrive35i is the least expensive X5 and has the least amount of goodies, while the xDrive35i adds AWD and the xDrive35d brings diesel torque and strong highway fuel economy. The xDrive50i adds the V8 and the strongest performance, and the M Sport Line adds sportier steering, M Sport accents, the M Sport transmission, 19-inch wheels, and revised aerodynamic body work.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 300 horsepower, a 3.0-liter diesel with 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, and a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The diesel is the efficiency-minded choice, while the V8 is the performance standout.
• Safety package: The X5 includes a full complement of front and side impact airbags, plus a vivid backup camera with directional guides and a large iDrive screen that can show multiple displays at once.
• Infotainment: The X5 uses a 10.2-inch iDrive screen with rotary-dial and joystick control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and touch-sensitive character entry for navigation input.
• Fuel efficiency: The sDrive35i is rated at 19/27 mpg, the xDrive35i at 18/27 mpg, the xDrive50i at 14/22 mpg, and the xDrive35d at 23/31 mpg.

Which 2014 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2014 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, and xDrive50i.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive35i: This is the least expensive entry point, and it gives you the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 300 horsepower and the standard 8-speed automatic. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without AWD.
• xDrive35i: This adds AWD while keeping the same 300-hp engine, so it is the better all-weather choice if you want the core X5 formula without jumping to diesel or V8 pricing.
• xDrive35d: This is the best-value pick if you care about torque and efficiency, since it combines 255 horsepower, 413 pound-feet of torque, and strong highway fuel economy.
• xDrive50i: This is the performance choice, with the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, 445 horsepower, and 4.9-second 0-60 mph capability. It suits you if acceleration matters most and fuel costs are secondary.

The safety content highlights a strong backup camera setup and a full complement of front and side impact airbags.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW X5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 819 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,733, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $11,804 sits slightly below last year's $13,133.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. For a future seller, the softer pricing means there may be less room for appreciation, so condition and maintenance history matter even more when it comes time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 BMW X5 safe?

The 2014 BMW X5 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The X5 also has a full complement of front and side impact airbags, plus a vivid backup camera with directional guides and a large iDrive screen that can show navigation and vehicle menus at the same time. That setup gives you useful visibility and convenience features, especially for a large SUV.

One caveat is that the safety content here emphasizes camera and airbag coverage rather than a broader named driver-assistance suite, so you should verify the exact equipment on any used example you consider.

Should I buy a 2014 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It marks the first year of the third-generation X5, with a more elegant, stately design and a much improved iDrive setup.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,440, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $11,804 average.
• It further emphasizes the X5’s sporty, swift-handling character while keeping the SUV practicality buyers want.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and owner satisfaction is strong. If you are willing to pay more for a slightly newer example, the 2015 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who want to stay close to the X5’s sporty formula.
