What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW X5?

At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or lower-priced example. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, and any evidence that the vehicle has been repaired after a collision. Because this model can be option-heavy, it also pays to confirm that the features you care about are actually present and functioning.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The sDrive35i is the least expensive trim and has the least amount of goodies, while the xDrive35i adds AWD and the xDrive35d brings diesel torque and strong highway fuel economy. The xDrive50i adds the V8’s performance punch, and the M Sport Line adds sportier steering, M Sport accents, the M Sport transmission, 19-inch wheels, and revised aerodynamic body work.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 300 hp, a 3.0-liter diesel with 255 hp and 413 pound-feet of torque, and a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 445 hp and 480 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy ranges from 19/27 for the sDrive35i to 23/31 for the diesel, while the V8 is rated at 14 mpg city/22 highway.
• Safety package: The X5 includes a full complement of front and side impact airbags, plus a vivid backup camera with directional guides and a large screen that can show multiple displays at once.
• Infotainment: The cabin centers on a massive 10.2-inch iDrive screen with rotary-dial control, Bluetooth phone integration, and touch-sensitive character entry. The system also handles audio, navigation, and vehicle settings.
• Fuel efficiency: The sDrive35i returns 19/27 mpg, the xDrive35i gets 18/27 mpg, the xDrive35d returns 23/31 mpg, and the xDrive50i is rated at 14 mpg city/22 highway.

Which 2014 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2014 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, and xDrive50i.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive35i: This is the least expensive way into the X5, and it gives you the core 300-hp turbocharged inline-six experience. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without AWD.
• xDrive35i: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the same 300-hp engine but adds AWD. If you want the most balanced mix of traction, performance, and everyday usability, this is the one to target.
• xDrive35d: Choose this if you want the diesel’s 255 hp, 413 pound-feet of torque, and strong highway fuel economy. It suits buyers who value long-distance efficiency and towing-friendly torque.
• xDrive50i: This is the performance pick, with the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 making 445 hp and 480 pound-feet of torque. It’s the right choice if you want the quickest, most powerful X5 and are willing to pay more at the pump.

• Inventory: There are 792 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.68% compared with last year.

What is the 2014 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $11,736 sits slightly below last year's $12,851.

That price movement suggests the X5 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. The strongest resale outcomes usually come from well-kept examples with desirable equipment and clean history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2014 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.68% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 marks the first year of the third generation, bringing a more elegant design and a much improved iDrive system.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,337, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $11,736 average.
• It emphasizes a more refined driving feel and all-wheel-drive practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because prices have softened and the market still offers a decent number of deals. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly newer alternative, the 2015 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2014’s stronger value proposition.
