CarGurus Analysis: 2014 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,450 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,110, 30.5% of 2014 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 BMW 3 Series 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
52.4% of 2014 BMW 3 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sports sedan that still leans hard into the qualities that made the nameplate famous: deft handling, sublime steering, and silky engines in a clean 4-door body. It also has the kind of road manners that make it easy to appreciate in everyday driving, with punchy acceleration, solid and reassuring brakes, and handling that stays flat and confident without sending excessive jolts through the cabin on rougher roads.
That balance of agility and composure is a big part of the appeal, especially for buyers who want a sedan that feels engaging rather than merely practical. At the same time, the 2014 BMW 3 Series is not presented as an untouchable benchmark anymore; the source notes that newer rivals have gotten close and, in some cases, surpassed it, so shoppers are encouraged to compare carefully. Even so, it remains a compelling choice for drivers who value a polished, athletic feel and a premium driving experience.

Diesel review only, I’ve never tested the gasoline models. The BMW 328D diesel xdrive is the most fuel efficient internal combustion engine powered all wheel drive vehicle. Go ahead and try to find another more efficient, you won’t be able to. For Highway it will get you into the 52 MPG range stock, and with a some modification into the 56 range, City is still high 40’s. It has all the creature comfort’s you could want, and is a quite, comfortable ride! Blasts through snow and ice especially with winter tires, this is a great car for all regions. Car is plenty spacious for four and has a large trunk (boot ) storage. Find yourself one!

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,085 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,798 |
| Year-Round High | $10,576 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,575 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.63% |
Prices have softened 4.63% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,442 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2014 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.79/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the fun driving experience, modern styling, and safety features. The user feedback also points to comfort, fuel efficiency in the diesel model, and a spacious interior as recurring positives.
For you, that means this model year fits best if you want a sporty sedan that still works well for everyday driving. The market also shows 32.2% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise for the car’s long-term appeal and overall confidence in the model. The expert assessment also describes BMW’s 4-year/50,000-mile no-cost maintenance plan as generous, with scheduled checkups and replacements for oil, wipers, brake discs and pads, and other parts.
That said, used buyers should still watch for maintenance history and wear items, since long-term ownership costs can rise if the car was not serviced consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition details that matter most in a premium sports sedan: service records, tire wear, brake condition, and whether the electronics and comfort features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base, Luxury, Sport and M Sport trims are all mentioned, and the Sport and M Sport versions add more aggressive body styling, larger wheels and stiffer suspensions. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment.
- Powertrain: You can shop four engines, including 2.0-liter twin-turbo 4-cylinder options, a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder, and a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel 4-cylinder. The diesel is noted for an EPA-estimated 45-mpg-highway rating.
- Safety package: BMW Assist eCall is standard, along with adaptive brake lamps and automatic brake drying. Blind-spot detection, parking sensors and even a basic alarm system are not standard.
- Infotainment: The big color screen, BMW Apps, Bluetooth streaming audio and a USB connector are all part of the tech story. The system also supports an automated parallel parking system, head-up display, adaptive cruise control and a bird’s-eye-view camera setup as options.
- Fuel efficiency: The diesel 328d is cited with an EPA-estimated 45-mpg-highway rating, while the tester returned 17 mpg in mostly city driving.
Which 2014 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2014 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Luxury, Sport and M Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but the content makes clear that BMW charges extra for many features, so the base trim is best if you want the lowest starting point and plan to shop carefully for options.
- Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel without moving into the more aggressive sport-oriented setup.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more aggressive body styling, larger wheels and stiffer suspension while keeping the core 3 Series character intact.
- M Sport: Pick this if you want the most aggressive appearance and chassis tuning mentioned in the data, and you’re willing to pay for it.
BMW Assist eCall is standard, but blind-spot detection, parking sensors and a basic alarm system are not.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,442 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.63% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,798, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $10,085 sits slightly below last year's $10,575.
That softer pricing trend suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition, because condition and maintenance history will matter more when the market is already easing.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2014 BMW 3 Series didn’t fare too well in new small-overlap crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it still gains five overall stars on government crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive brake lamps, automatic brake drying in wet weather, and BMW Assist eCall, which can dial 911 after a crash. The data also notes that a backup camera, blind-spot detection, parking sensors and a basic alarm system are not standard.
That small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind, so you should pay close attention to crash history, repair quality and the condition of the safety systems on any used example.
Should I buy a 2014 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert assessment says the car still delivers deft handling, sublime steering and silky engines, even as rivals have closed the gap.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,645, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,085 average.
- It becomes purely a sedan, which narrows its focus and sharpens its identity.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year setup and a sedan-only focus, the 2015 is the cleaner alternative.
