There are only a few minor changes to the Mitsubishi Eclipse for 2004. The base level RS now comes standard with power mirrors and stock sound systems have been upgraded from four to six speakers. Although the Eclipse was largely a carry over in 2004, an entirely redesigned model is already in the works.

There are four trim levels for the Eclipse coupe: RS, GS, GT and GTS. The RS comes equipped with the convenience basics, like full power accessories, a CD player, cup holders and air conditioning. Upper level models add cruise control, a rear spoiler, fog lamps, and keyless entry.

The RS and GS are powered by by the smaller of two Eclipse engine options: a 2.4 liter inline four. Both models are supplied with 147 horsepower and 158 pound-feet of torque, and come standard with a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is optional, but only the GS model includes a manual shift gate. The GT and GTS are both equipped with a 3.0 liter V-6, providing 200 horsepower on the GT and 210 horsepower on the GTS.

Eclipse fuel economy numbers are respectable, but certainly not class-leading. The manual transmission RS and GS models are estimated at 23/31 mpg. Drivers report mixed driving averages in the low 20s. Reviewers praise the Eclipse for its road manners and acceleration (in the V-6 models). The front-wheel drive coupe handles hard turns with confidence, and the cabin is well-protected from most bumps. Testers would like to see more responsive steering, consistent with the car's sport-oriented presentation.

Both engines produce significant noise, and the tires give a steady hum on rougher surfaces. The cabin is well-organized and controls are user friendly, but reviewers report that the presence of lower quality plastics impedes upon the ambiance.
