The Mitsubishi Eclipse receives a very light face lift for the 2003 model year, highlighted by an altered front fascia and a new taillight design.

A new trim level has been added, bring the number of Eclipse variants to four. The 2002 styles continue: the base RS, mid-level GS and the V6-powered GT. The GTS joins the lineup this year. This top tier model houses a more powerful version of the V-6 engine, plus a host of additional amenities. All models come standard with air conditioning, a CD player, power windows and locks, and automatic headlights.

The RS and GS are both powered by a 2.4 liter inline four. This power plant supplies 147 horsepower and 158 pound-feet of torque, and may be paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The GT and GTS house a 3.0 liter V-6, which is available with the same transmission options. Both the GT and GTS receive 205 pound-feet of torque from this engine, but the GTS V-6 gets ten additional horsepower, for a total output of 210. The four cylinder/manual combination offers the strongest Eclipse fuel economy at 23/31 mpg. The the other end of the efficiency spectrum, the V-6/automatic pairing is estimated at 20/27 mpg.

Reviewers agree that the Eclipse coupe does not offer breath-taking acceleration, with the GTS reaching 60 mph off the line in just over eight seconds. Take offs with the four cylinder engine may frustrate some aggressive drivers. The Eclipse's solid construction makes for a comfortable and stable ride, but the steering precision may not meet the sporting expectations of some drivers. Unfortunately , ABS only comes standard on the GTS.
