The 1997 Chevy Astro mini-van introduced an anti-theft system, entry and exit lighting inside, and daytime running lights on the front and back exterior. Chevrolet improved the steering and the problematic transmission, making steering and shifting smoother.

The 1997 Astros also had composite headlights and a new grille, which had previously been only on its more expensive trims. As with previous models, they had 4.3-liter, 6-cylinder engines.

Owners rave about its comfort and practicality for long trips hauling lots of stuff (including motorcycles and boats). However, many owners cite expensive maintenance issues, such as the window motors and (according to one owner-reviewer) "everything electric." Owners also complain of poor gas mileage and poor reliability.
