Overview

The 1996 Mazda 626 got a little facelift, but other than that saw few changes. The grille was trimmed with chrome, making it more noticeable. In addition, the 626 now met side-impact safety standards.
The 1996 Mazda 626 is available in four trims: the base DX, the midrange LX and LX V6, and the ES. The ES is the high-end version, coming well-equipped with amenities such as power seats and leather upholstery. The base engine is a 2.0-liter, 118-horsepower four cylinder. The V6 boasts 2.5 liters and 164 horsepower. Fuel economy for the base engine was 23/31, and for the V6 it was 20/26.
Owners of the 1996 Mazda 626 are pleased with the car because it handles well, is enjoyable to drive, and gets fairly good gas mileage. However, a number of people claim the automatic transmission have a tendency to burn out quickly, which can be very expensive to repair.

I put over 200,000 miles on this car and it still was in good condition till it was totaled by a drunk driver.

Overall one of the best cars I owned, 5 speed manual gave you power on downshifts, handled really well, cheap to own, burned very little gas, was good on the road, city too. Fun to drive, plenty of room and rode great, the Goodyear Eagle GT's were a perfect fit for it. Clutch lasted 160K.

Good car for $1500. Drives really nice and the power is good. It'l rev to almost 8000rpm and sounds amazing doing so! Everything works like new and the sunroof is nice to have on hot days. The brakes are very good, they do fade after a few emergence stops but the ABS works really well getting it from 100km/h to 0km/h in about 110 feet with good tires.

its really fuel efficient and fun to drive in the snow, but its not as fast as i'd like it to be and its not really the coolest looking car ever but it gets the job done. ps- stick shift rocks!
