For 1993, Volkswagen added some power to its Passat line with the introduction of the GLX trim package, which came with a 2.8-liter V6 engine that generated 172 hp -- a nice improvement over the Passat's entry-level GL trim package, which came with the same 2.0-liter, 134-hp 4-cylinder engine offered in previous years. Both engines were coupled with a five-speed manual overdrive transmission, which was standard; a four-speed automatic was available as an option. A multifunction trip computer and CFC-free air conditioning were added as standard features to all Passats. Other standard features included power windows, power door locks, power steering, power exterior mirrors, power brakes, cruise control, bucket seats, and an anti-theft alarm system. The GLX package added anti-lock brakes, traction control, a slightly altered front end with fog lamps, and six-spoke alloy wheels. While drivers noted that repairs could be expensive (especially for the high-mileage versions available today), they also noted that the Passat could be reliable and fun to drive, especially the GLX V6 package. However, drivers also noted there were lots of problems with the cars, which often needed frequent trips to the repair shop.
