1992 Toyota Pickup 4x4 4cyl, 5 speed 150,000 miles, purchased at 30,000 miles. Pros - Very simple and straight forward vehicle. 24mpg in 2wd on highway. Only broke down once in over 10 years, due to a corroded wire leading to the fuel pump. Survived many Detroit and Wisconsin winters, easy and fun to 4wd drift through corners at high speed in snow. Also survived accidental hitting and driving over of many things (tv set, curbs, small tree, etc) that probably would have seriously damaged more fancy trucks. Great climate control. No a/c necessary, except in stop and go traffic. Comfortable bench seat. Very easy to drive. Cheap insurance. Good resale value. Cons - Body disintegrated. Engine slightly more powerful than a hamster in a wheel, so no towing anything remotely heavy. Though I did beat a 70's Land Cruiser in a drag-race down a very bumpy alley once. Rear drums had a tendency to lock-up when humid. Lots of front end dive during braking. Trail braking not recommended. Exhaust apparently made out of untreated body panels. Everything including the manifold had to be replaced. No tach. No cruise control. No low fuel light (leading to me, and my ADD, running out of gas more than once). I don't know what options were available. Very limited interior space with standard cab. Tall peoples' knees will hit glove box.

This was my first truck and I LOVED IT! Put almost 100k miles on it and never once had a problem. I sold it to a good family friend and he had it for almost 10 years before he sold it. BEST truck, a lot of fun to drive and no repairs needed!

Most versatile vehicle I've ever owned. Goes, and goes. Toyota backs up their product too. My head gasket blew at 145K, Toyota rebuilt the whole engine for free!!! (even though the extended warranty expired at 100K. Now Toyota has a customer for life.

1992 Toyota Pickup DLX Xtra Cab 2WD Performance The 22R-E engine is a bit slow, but I heard that the 6 cylinder is not much faster. Stock performance from this truck is definitely enough to get any job done, whether its hauling furniture to a dorm room or pulling out a tree stump. The brakes stop the car well, but it would be nice to have ABS as a precautionary measure. Steering and handling is responsive, but it's nowhere near the handling you would receive from a car. Build Quality This truck is very reliable! The repairs are fairly inexpensive and as long as you keep up with the required maintenance (oil changes, oil filter, air filter) the truck should last you for a very long time. Appearance The stock paint on the truck is still glossy from 1992. It's definitely lasted and stood the test of time. The grille is another story. After 430,000 miles, the original grille starts to lose the shiny metallic luster. Body wise, this pickup looks like your average-joe, run-of-the-mill truck. Cost of Ownership The 4 cylinder, 2WD definitely saves gas. with a 13.7 gallon tank, I get about 350-400 on a tank. City mileage is a bit low, but driving on the highway, I average about 31-33 MPG. Fun Factor Trucks are trucks. I suppose you could have fun going off roading in a 4X4, but it being a 2WD, it has to stay on the paved asphalt. More horsepower and better handling would be great, but for a 1992 truck, the drive is very responsive. I wouldn't say that driving the pickup is fun, but the peace of mind and reliability you get from driving one is definitely a plus. The 1992 pickup is a very sturdy, solid, and reliable truck. I inherited this truck from my uncle 2 years ago with 397,000 miles. Presently, at 430,000 miles, the truck is still running like a champ. It definitely has its pros and cons, but is a very practical, useful, and desired truck - especially now with gas prices soaring at $5 a gallon.
