Sitting at the head of the pack for Audi sedans, the 1989 V8 saw few changes from its introduction the year before. Audi's 4-door luxury sedan that seats 5 (four comfortably) was based on the Audi 100 platform, though it had a longer wheelbase for more interior space, and a bigger 3.6-liter, twin-cam V8 at 240-hp. A three-mode 4-speed electronic auto tran was standard, allowing you to choose the type of powertrain best suited to your needs -- economy, sporty, or manual. The 1989 Audi V8 came standard with quattro all-wheel drive, which meant expert handling, confidence behind the wheel, and superb performance in all-road/all-weather conditions. The interior was very roomy and well-appointed, featuring such Audi standards as leather upholstery, heated seats, power windows and locks, a power sunroof, and air conditioning. ABS brakes and a driver's side airbag were extra safety features. Acceleration was not great with the 1989 V8, due to its full-size dimensions and the extra load of the quattro system and all the standard features Audi heaped onto its sedans. Though it was satisfyingly fast enough on the highway, it only did 0-60 in 9.7 seconds, even with the V8 engine. Hardly something to write home about. However, a comfortable ride, easy handling, and quattro capability are the biggest standouts for the 1989 Audi V8. Lousy dealer service and expensive repairs top the complaints, as they do with all Audi makes.
