Overview
What category comes below a subcompact? If it doesn't have a name, perhaps we should consider calling it a Colt. This bite-sized mini car is a stylish subcompact that boasts excellent fuel economy and reliability. Built on a 95.3-inch wheelbase, with 9.0 cubic feet of trunk space, the 1972 Dodge Colt not a spacious car, but it served a utilitarian need as a commuter car. On offer were a cute 2-door coupe in hard or soft top, boxier 4-door sedan, or practical 5-door family wagon. A 1.4-liter or 1.6-liter, 85-hp I4 was paired with a 4-speed manual transmission or 3-speed automatic.
There were few cosmetic or structural changes to the 1972 Colt. Most refinements focused on improving the braking performance by adding larger front disc brakes. Some tweaking helped reduce noise as well. The 1972 Colt sat five, though admittedly the backseat was not for lounging. One nice feature was its adjustable reclining front bucket seats (not available in the coupe).
Those who drive it for everyday use comment on its reliability and durability. Many original parts can be found intact and untouched on the 1972 Dodge Colt. Owners also liked its reclining bucket seats, the rear-wheel drive, and the maintenance-free record.
