In 1973, the first Sno*Drift performance rally kicked off in Michigan, a race that was held on snow-covered gravel roads. The third place finisher in this inaugural event was a Dodge Colt. Unbeknownst to most owners of this economy subcompact was that the Dodge Colt was popular on the rally circuit and would continue to place well in subsequent Sno*Drift events. The 1973 Dodge Colt was virtually the same car as in 1972. A 2-door coupe was available in either hard or soft top versions. A 4-door sedan offered a little more room for four, and a 5-door wagon featured extra storage capacity. Reclining bucket seats were suprisingly comfortable for front seat riders. Engine choices on this rear-wheel drive were either a 1.4-liter I4 or a 1.6-liter I4 at 85-hp and 90 lb-ft of torque. The 1973 Colt was based on a Mitsubishi platform, and as such performed much like its Toyota counterparts. It got great mileage, was energetic due to its light weight, and had a pretty durable engine -- features which made it an attractive economy purchase.

1973 Dodge Colt 1600 GS (Mitsubishi Colt galannt). Car came standard in South Africa with a 4 speed gearbox and 2 twin choke downdraft Niki carbs on the single overhead cam shaft Saturn 1600 motor. RPM redline only started at 7200 with the motor happily and easily reaching this with no hesitation through the first three gears. Very quick acceleration, good braking and very predictable handling. Car came std with 165 x 70 x 13 tyres on 13 inch steel rostyle rims. Very stylish and modern design for it's time with excellent build quality. Exceptionally comfortable black vinyl covered bucket type seats with built in headrests and adjustable lumbar support. New off the showroom floor the car cost R2875.00 with the SA Rand approximately one to one with the US Dollar in those days. I was so impressed withh this little car that in 1976 I purchased the new shaped 5 speed version which was also a great, fast, reliable, fun to drive motor car. Ever since 1979 I have been driving Mercedes Benz vehicles. Sedans, 2 door sports coupe and currently in 2010 still the ML SUV, but every day I still miss my little Dodge Colts which were withhout a doubt the best, most fun to drive and trouble free cars that I have had the privilage of owning.

I have owned the Colt for many years and for it's day, it was very well constructed. It is simple to work on, but it is very hard to find NOS parts. I bought a 1973 colt brand new, 1/2 hour later the throttle stuck wide open in reverse! then the flywheel broke, then the brakes failed, then the flywheel broke again, it was a lemon, court order made Dodge take it back
