What’s New for the 2026 Volkswagen ID.4
The Volkswagen ID.4 underwent a mid-cycle refresh in 2024, so this year's updates are minor. The ID.4 now gets a North American Charging System (NACS) adapter and comes standard with VW’s 2-in-1 Mobile EV Charging Cable, which previously cost extra. This update saves buyers a bit of money and provides access to Tesla’s Supercharger charging network via the NACS port. Finally, the top Pro S Plus trim now features an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink compatibility.
Design
The ID.4 has a fairly typical profile for a compact crossover SUV, though features like light bars and stylish 19-inch alloy wheels lend some distinction. It’s available with options such as 21-inch wheels and a Black Package that replaces some exterior details with blacked-out elements. The overall look is simple but effective, and it’s aging well compared to some others in the segment.
Powertrain
The ID.4 is available with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) powertrain, delivering 282 horsepower, and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain with 335 hp, both with a single-speed automatic transmission. Neither is particularly quick, and drivers who are expecting VW’s typical athletic handling will likely be disappointed. This EV is easy to drive and has a comfortable ride, but several other small EV crossovers offer a more engaging driving experience. RWD models are estimated for 291 miles of range, and AWD models are estimated for 263 miles of range.

Interior
The ID.4 seats five, with a comfortable front row and adequate second-row space. Standard upholstery is a mix of cloth and synthetic leather, and heated front seats are standard. Options include leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, and a heated windshield. The ID.4 doesn’t have a front trunk (frunk), but the cargo area has a 30.3-cubic-foot capacity that expands to 64.2 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded down.
Technology
Volkswagen equips the ID.4 with a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, voice recognition, and a seven-speaker audio system. There aren’t many infotainment options or upgrades, though the top Pro S Plus trim does get a nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The infotainment display has an intuitive layout, with nearby slider controls for volume and climate-control.
Safety
The Volkswagen ID.4 comes standard with a rearview camera, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. All models also come with front and rear parking sensors, park assist, a post-collision braking system, an emergency assist system, and a semi-automated highway driving system. Options include a 360-degree camera and adaptive headlights. The ID.4 earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not yet published full test results for the 2026 ID.4, but it has performed well in the tests completed.
