What’s New for the 2025 BMW X5

The X5 is largely a carryover for the 2025 model year. One new key feature that has been added is the lane-change assist. If the available hands-free highway driving system is selected, the driver can now initiate a lane change by simply glancing at the corresponding side-view mirror. The X5 received a refresh just last year, so otherwise, the changes are minimal.

Design

Many other BMW models are undergoing radical (and polarizing) design changes. The ’24 X5 refresh was a modest one from a design perspective, which will likely sit well with the majority of the model's customers. Trims include sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive50e, and M60i. The X5 comes standard with 20-inch alloy wheels and is available with 21-inch alloy wheels. The range-topping M60i trim can also be had with 22-inch wheels.

Powertrain

The standard powertrain in the 2025 X5 is a 350-horsepower turbocharged inline-six paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. sDrive models route power to the rear wheels (RWD), while those with the xDrive designation send power to all four (AWD). The xDrive50e comes equipped with a similar engine, paired with an electric motor, putting out a combined 483 horsepower. It also offers an electric range of 39 miles. The M60i comes equipped with a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine. There’s also the high-performance X5 M (treated as a separate model).

The plug-in xDrive50e returns a combined 58 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent). Its battery can be charged in three to four hours on a Level 2 charger. The base powertrain returns fuel economy of 23 mpg city, 27 highway, and 25 combined.

2025 BMW X5 Preview - interior

Interior

The X5 boasts a spacious five-passenger interior with up to 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. With the rear seats occupied, there’s still a useful 33.9 cubic feet of rear cargo space. In the xDrive50e, those numbers drop to 71.2 and 33.1, respectively.

Standard features on the 2025 X5 include push-button start, automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and synthetic leather upholstery. Available features include a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and even massaging front seats.

Technology

The X5 comes equipped with a fully digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. It also comes with five USB ports, wireless device charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Available tech features include BMW’s gesture control, a 16-speaker Harmon Kardon premium stereo system, and an upgraded 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Safety

Standard driver-assistance features on the X5 include automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing wipers, and front and rear parking sensors. Safety upgrades include a head-up display, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
