What’s New for the 2024 Volvo XC40
For 2024, the previous base engine has been dropped from the lineup, leaving the upgraded engine as the sole offering. Additionally, all-wheel drive (AWD) is now standard across all versions, and the base Core trim gains additional standard features.
Design
The XC40 boasts a standout upright design that makes the most of its subcompact footprint. It’s offered in three trims: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. The Core comes equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels. Stepping up to the Plus adds 19-inch alloy wheels and fog lights. The Ultimate trim gets 20-inch alloy wheels and pixel technology headlights.
Powertrain
The previous 147-horsepower four-cylinder engine has been dropped from the XC40 for 2024. Now, the standard engine is the previously optional turbocharged four-cylinder in a mild hybrid configuration, developing 247 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque and connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
This powertrain returns fuel economy of 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined (premium fuel is required). When properly equipped, the XC40 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Interior
Standard features on the 2024 XC40 Core trim include dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory settings. Several additional options are available on the Core, including leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof.
Upgrading to the Plus trim makes the leather upholstery and sunroof standard. It also adds a power outlet in the cargo compartment, a power-adjustable front-passenger seat, ambient cabin lighting, and a foldable cargo load floor. The Ultimate trim adds gloss black and driftwood interior accents, as well as a Crystal gear selector knob by Orrefors.
The XC40 provides 20.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. With the rear seats folded, there is access to 57.5 cubic feet of cargo space. A hands-free power liftgate is standard equipment across the lineup.
Technology
The XC40 comes standard with a digital instrument panel, wireless device charging, and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 13-speaker Harmon Kardon premium stereo system is optional on the Plus and standard on the Ultimate trim.
Safety
No matter which trim you select, the XC40 comes equipped with a long list of standard driver-assistance features. This includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, rain-sensing wipers, traffic-sign recognition, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Available driver-assistance features include front and side parking sensors, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
