Chevrolet’s heavy-duty truck lineup is impressive, offering massive towing and hauling capabilities. The Silverado 3500 is the mid-range model, and for 2022, the truck gets a standard Multi-Flex tailgate.

Chevy offers the Silverado 3500 in Work Truck (WT), LT, LTZ, and High Country trims. Work Truck models are utilitarian vehicles with few creature comforts and a focus on pure capability. At the top end, the High Country trim brings upscale finishes and the best tech of the bunch.

The 3500 comes standard with a 6.6-liter gas V8 that makes 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive (RWD or 4WD). Max payload with this engine is 7,442 pounds when it’s paired with two-wheel drive (2WD) and dual rear wheels. Towing reaches 16,800 with a traditional trailer and 17,200 pounds with a gooseneck. A 6.6-liter turbodiesel is available that produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. That massive pulling force is sent to the rear or to all four wheels through a ten-speed automatic. With this engine, the 3500 can tow up to 36,000 pounds and haul up to 6,523 pounds in certain configurations.

The 2022 Silverado 3500 is available in three body styles: Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab. High Country trucks come exclusively in the Crew Cab style. Standard and long beds are available, and some models are available with dual rear wheels.

A 7-inch touchscreen comes standard for the WT trim, and an 8-inch screen comes standard starting with the LT trim. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system runs smoothly and offers an intuitive way to interact with the truck without being too distracted while driving. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with Bluetooth that can support two devices simultaneously and two speakers.

The top High Country trim brings SiriusXM radio, a Bose Premium Sound System with seven speakers and a subwoofer, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless smartphone connections for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a driver memory system. Luxury upgrades include heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and an 8-inch digital gauge cluster.

Heavy-duty trucks are not subjected to the same crash tests that most passenger cars are required to complete. Chevy includes front- and rear-parking assist, a bed-view camera, hitch guidance, rear cross-traffic alerts, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and an HD surround-view camera system for the top trim, but lower trims require added-cost options to get advanced driver aids.

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 starts at $39,700 before options, taxes, and destination fees. With a few options and accessories, it’s possible to push the MSRP past $90,000 for a High Country trim with a long bed, dual rear wheels, and upgraded exterior appearance options.
