Overview
The GMC Sierra 3500HD mostly carries over for the 2022 model year, but it does get a cool new exterior color option.
The GMC Sierra 3500HD carries over mostly unchanged for 2022, though a new exterior finish, Forest Metallic, is added to the color palette. This heavy-duty pickup truck is available in a wide range of configurations to suit the needs of shoppers in this class.
The 2022 GMC Sierra comes standard with rear-wheel drive (RWD), and four-wheel drive (4WD) is available. The trim hierarchy consists of Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali models, and all but the AT4 are available with the choice of single or dual rear wheels.
Cab and bed configurations, too, are numerous and add to the complexity of Sierra 3500HD configuration. Pro, SLE, and SLT grades are available in Regular Cab Long Bed, Double Cab Long Bed, Crew Cab Standard Bed, and Crew Cab Long Bed configurations, while AT4 and Denali models are available only with the Crew Cab Standard Bed and Crew Cab Long Bed combinations.
The Sierra 3500HD comes standard with a 6.6-liter V8 gasoline engine paired with a six-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. It’s rated for 401 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, though payload capacity varies by cab, bed, and layout configuration; maximum payload is 7,442 pounds with the RWD, dual-rear-wheel, Regular Cab model. Towing capacity is 16,800 pounds with a Class IV hitch and 17,200 pounds with an upgrade to a gooseneck.
For 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque, check out the 6.6-liter V8 Duramax Turbo-Diesel, paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Diesel models max out with a 6,523-pound payload and up to 36,000 pounds of towing capacity when properly configured and equipped.
All trims above the base Pro model include the flexible MultiPro tailgate for easier bed usage; Pro buyers can pay extra for this feature.
The GMC Sierra 3500HD’s cabin comes fitted with Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay compatibility across the board, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in the top three trims. Pro, SLE, and SLT models come with a six-speaker AM/FM radio, and Bose audio is available in upper trims.
There’s a slim list of safety features available with the GMC Sierra 3500HD, but they’re carefully chosen with the goal of increasing visibility around this truck’s hefty body and maintaining safety while trailering a heavy load. All of the following safety features vary in availability throughout the lineup but come standard on the Denali trim.
GMC includes a rearview camera with the Pro and SLE trims. SLE models can be upgraded to HD View, which comes standard on SLT. A surround-view camera system that includes multiple views and two trailer cameras is available on SLT and AT4 models. Other safety features include front and rear park-assist, optional throughout the lineup; lane-departure warning, available on all but the Pro; safety seat alert, available on SLT and up; and automatic headlamps, available on all but the Pro.
The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD starts at $39,095 for the base Pro trim in Regular Cab configuration. The SLE starts at $44,495, also in Regular Cab. The SLT comes in at $56,295, the AT4 at $61,995, and the Denali at $68,395, all in Crew Cab configuration.

June 9, 2024NOT A GOOD BUY FOR THE MONEY! Simply put, the GMC Sierra is overpriced and under equipped. I just sold my 2019 F250 and that was a superior truck in very sense of the word compared to the GMC Sierra 3500HD but that doesnt stop GMC from overpricing this vehicle. Its sad when a work truck costs $85,000 and has sub-standard equipment. When will the truck industry reprice to lower affordable pricing? Its all about value for the dollar spent and ALL truck markets are nuts. Keep your old vehicles and push this market back by voting with your dollars.
