2021 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Overview
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is a performance icon, dating back to 1967. Just as it did then, the GT500 name means big power and fun for the road and the track. The modern GT500 was introduced for the 2020 model year. For 2021, the GT500 adds new colors and carbon-fiber parts available as after-sale accessories.
The GT500 comes standard with dual-zone climate control, heated and cooled front seats, and a 12-inch fully digital instrument panel. It also comes standard with the SYNC 3 infotainment system, operated via an 8-inch touchscreen. This system is easy to use and integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a WiFi hot spot. The GT500 is available with a 12-speaker B&O premium stereo system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are options, but little else is available in the way of driver-assistance features. The GT500 provides 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space.
The beating heart of the GT500 is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. It cranks out 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (there is no manual option for the GT500). This combination is good for a zero-to-60 mph time of just 3.5 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 180 mph, per Ford. EPA-estimated fuel economy is a less-stellar 12 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, 14 mpg combined.
Stopping power is provided by large (16.5-in front/14.6-in rear) ventilated disc brakes with red-painted Brembo calipers. The GT500 also features a MagneRide damping system and adjustable power-assisted steering. Along with the drivetrain, all of these systems are optimized via drive mode selector with Normal, Sport, Track, Drag, and Weather settings.
The optional Carbon Fiber Track Package features 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tires. This package removes the rear seats (to save weight) and upgrades the fronts to Recaro leather sport bucket seats. It also features a carbon-fiber instrument panel, carbon-fiber GT4 rear wing, and adjustable strut top mounts. For 2021, Grabber Yellow, Antimatter Blue, and Carbonized Gray Metallic have been added as color options.
The 2021 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 starts at $72,900. The GT500 is backed by a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
