2020 BMW 3 Series Overview

For 2020, BMW expands the 3 Series lineup with a new trim. The compact 3 Series competes with mainstays like the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Lexus IS.

The base 330i carries over from last year. It features a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and connects to an 8-speed automatic transmission. While rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes standard, BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is available. Fuel-economy ratings are as high as 26 mpg city, 36 highway, and 30 combined with premium fuel. The 330i gets to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds with RWD. With xDrive, the 0-60 mph time drops to 5.3 seconds.

New for 2020 is the M340i trim. It gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that makes 382 hp and 369 lb-ft and pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Like the 330i, RWD comes standard, while xDrive is optional. The M340i delivers fuel economy of 22, 30, and 25, and hits 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.

The 330i comes standard with the Sport Line design package. Luxury and M Sport designs are optional. The M Sport includes an aerodynamic kit, dark trim, an M Sport suspension, premium steering, and LED fog lights. The M340i includes the M Sport package standard. Other standard features across both trims include power heated side mirrors, leatherette upholstery, a 10-speaker sound system, a touchscreen infotainment system, keyless start, a split-folding rear seat, and a moonroof. Optional features include leather upholstery, a larger infotainment system with navigation, front and rear heated seats, Apple CarPlay, and gesture recognition.

Every 3 Series gets a reversing camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, lane-control assist, evasion aid, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and a head-up display (HUD) are available as options. The current 3 Series earned a 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The BMW 3 Series remains a benchmark in the compact luxury segment for performance, technology, and style.
