The 2013 Hyundai Elantra picks up where its brethren left off and shows every intention of staying at the top of the heap in the competitive and crowded field of affordable small cars. The Elantra has been around for a couple of decades and has come leaps and bounds in the last few years from the days of being a tinny and cut-rate alternative to the class-leading Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas of the world.
Now the Korean manufacturer has turned the tables on its Japanese rivals, an eye-catching about-face capped off with the naming of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra as North American Car of the Year. The 2013 version, again sleek and sporty on the outside to go with a solid inside and impressive performance and fuel economy, follows suit.
Hyundai hopes to ride the success of the Elantra further: It will bring out both a Hyundai Elantra Coupe and Hyundai Elantra GT as separate models.
A major overhaul for the 2011 model year helped vault the Elantra and its two basic trims, the GLS and Limited, to the forefront, and minor tweaking the last couple of years has kept it there. Hyundai has even beefed up the sound of the Elantra’s horn.
A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, good for 148 hp and 131 lb-ft of torque, provides plenty of oomph to get the 2013 Hyundai Elantra comfortably around, reviewers say, in part because the car checks in at less than 2,700 pounds. Hyundai sends the front-wheel-drive Elantra out with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
With the help of an Active Eco System that adjusts engine and transmission parameters with the push of a button, the Elantra boasts fuel mileage estimates of 29 mpg city/40 highway.
The Elantra draws praise from reviewers for everything from the design of its exterior to its ride quality to the style and comfort of its interior, though experts note it’s not as fun to drive as competitors such as the Mazda3, Honda Fit or Ford Focus. That’s one of the few areas where rivals get an edge on the Elantra, though.
The 2013 Hyundai Elantra rates well when it comes to passenger and cargo space and is packed with standard features. The GLS gets full power accessories, keyless entry, heated mirrors, a trip computer and a 6-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary radio jack and an iPod/USB interface.
Hyundai also rolls what were the features of its Comfort Package into standard fare in the base 2013 Elantra GLS, so it now comes with cruise control, a telescoping steering wheel and air conditioning as well as 16-inch wheels. Heated front seats are available in a Preferred Package.
The 2013 Hyundai Elantra Limited gets a sunroof, heated front and rear seats and leather upholstery. A Technology Package for the Limited includes a dual-zone automatic climate control system with a clean-air ionizer, rear-view camera, upgraded sound system, a touch-screen infotainment interface and a navigation system with real-time traffic and weather.
The Elantra comes with stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes and a full array of airbags and has received top grades of good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for its crash tests, though it has not scored as well in government tests.

Absolutely the best car I have ever owned! I bought it in 2015 as a certified pre-owned vehicle and never once did I have any mechanical issues other than just this year the pump for the windshield wiper fluid finally went out. However, my boyfriend and I were able to repair that on our own. I planned on keeping this car a good long time as I take care of my vehicles. Unfortunately I was rear-ended in October and the vehicle was totaled. Im putting my faith once again into Hyundai and buying a certified pre-owned 2020 Kona that I have researched heavily. I loved my Elantra and found it to be an excellent vehicle. I very much hope to have the same exact experience with my Kona as when I test drove a 2018 which had the same engine as the 2020 I found it extremely responsive, fantastic breaking, smooth ride even on bumpy bad roads, major safety features, very powerful, and felt just like my Elantra to drive. I wont buy another Hyundai after owning a 2013 Elantra GLS for 11 years. Although Ive had no major problems, Ive had endless minor-to-moderate problems. These include: severe defects with peeling paint on the front/rear bumpers and all plastic parts; interior plastic parts that are junk, such as the visors; the center-mounted brake light, that fell apart (junky plastic parts shattered); lots of road noise at all times. Hyundais paint problems with this car are well-known, but the company refused my dealers appeal to get the car repainted some years ago. Very disappointing.Jun 29, 2024

I have always loved the Elantra Hyundai, ever since having my first Hyundai, years ago, a 2000 model, I fell head over heals with the luxury look and sleek body, and smooooooth ride.. You get the luxury feel without the luxury cost. Zero road noise, and for me thats what I want in a car!Mar 18, 2024

Id like a car that would be under 8000.00 . A Hyundai for sure. I run a rural route delivering mail 6 days a week. All dirt roads. My Hyundai has done a great job its got a 220,000 plus milage. Just put Tires on it today. I want to retire it.Aug 10, 2023

This has been a great car. Great gas mileage, rare problems except for the brake lights going out. Ive probably replaced the brake light bulbs 10 times! Hyundai hasnt issued a recall still. Ive replaced the wiring harness and its still happening! Hyundai needs to do something. This is not safe.Jun 19, 2022

Great car, many features for the price. Great mileage, low maintenance. Slick appearance. Very comfortable, roomy. Not quite as peppy as a Mazda3 (which was my 2nd choice), but peppy enough. Good handling, fun to drive. I use it mainly for commuting to work, but its a great trip car. Love the car, would recommend it to anyone and would buy this model again in a heartbeat.May 20, 2015

l love the appearance but the handling is fantastic !! It feels much larger when you inside and I feel safe in it with all the current safety options that comes standard . the fit on the dashboard is way off one side has 1/4 gap other inside is tight if I had seen this in the test drive would have passed on the car. But that's my fault .would had been nice if the salesman had pointed it out .Dream on.Jan 10, 2015

I like the look of the car, its reliable, great gas mileage and probably the lowest price. It's a great value. But it's not the fastest car on the block. I prefer a hatchback for added utility but got a used sedan instead because of the price and availability. Jan 04, 2015

I've enjoyed the car and it's run perfectly with no problems. I average in the low 30's for MPG's. The car was a lease with a low payment and the low payment is a result of Hyundai's improved status in the automotive landscape and stronger resale value.Oct 13, 2014

I purchased this vehicle as a commuter car, and also took in on several long trips. The interior is laid out very nice, driver friendly and very comfortable. It's exterior is also very attractive, and I have received numerous compliments on it. I have found no negatives about this vehicle. I bought it from a rental company with 30,000 miles. I have driven it 6,000 and already had the transmission replaced and a software update after getting a P2096 error code. I bought this car for its relatively roomy interior, reliability, and gas milege. It is obviously NOT reliable, and the mileage is only 2 mpg better than I got on my 1999 Camry, about 25.5 mpg. In addition, the ride is so rough I had the suspension checked, but the dealer says it's OK.
My car did not come with a spare tire, only that silly goo kit, so I told the salesman I wouldn't buy it without one. He purchased one out of his own pocket, but the manufacturer should provide it.
I like the layout of the dashboard and the driver's seat fits my 4'10" height well. The child carseat attaches easily. I drive my toddler grandson about 200 miles/week, so that's important, but of course with a toddler I also need reliability.
It handles relatively well, but not as well as my old Camry, and the acceleration is slow. It seems to have to "kick in", almost like a stick shift, even when the car is going at an already high speed. Braking is good,.
Frankly, after owning this car for three months/6,000 miles, I would not purchase a Hyundai again.Mar 17, 2014

Great price for an amazing car. I also purchased the extended, bumper-
to-bumper warranty for an additional $1,200. Which is well worth it
since I also purchased the tech. Package, and the extended warranty
covers any defects with the tech. Package as well. Great color, inside
and out. I got leather seats and it has heated seats in the front and
back.Great ride with good pickup for a sedan. In would highly

I will write a review in 6 months as I have only 1,000 miles on it to date. So far, it is exactly the car I expected. The quality of the interior/exterior and attention to detail to create the image and brand of the fluidic sculpture is exceptional. It is a very fun car to drive. It is a little "nervous" on moderate to severe bumps but the steering is very responsive. I have achieved 38-40 miles per gallon on our move to Florida. Engine, Oil, Battery, and EPS light on
6 days ago my car stalled at a red light after pressing the brake. The battery, oil, and engine light came on, there was no power, and the RPM needle had no movement. Upon restarting, the car ran fine again for 4 days, then it died again. This time it died after starting the car- the battery, oil, engine, and EPS light came on and there was no RPM movement and no power. After restarting the car, it was fine again. I took it to a mechanic who cannot replicate the issue, but thinks something is shortening the alternator so it cannot charge the battery. Both alternator and battery test fine, and there is no other diagnostic codes coming up. Since this is happening randomly, they have to keep the car to wait for it to happen again. Any ideas or experiences related to this? My car has 135k miles on it and gets regular maintenance.

Can 2014 Hyundai Elantra replacement lights fit a 2013 model? I found that 2014 led light replacements are cheaper and the 2013 lights look the same, so is there any difference?
