An adequate but underwhelming preview to the small crossover class.
Replacing the Neon sedan for 2007 is the Caliber, a 4-door hatchback that sits higher than a conventional compact car and lower than many compact SUVs. While it packs some nifty convenience features and good safety ratings, the Caliber is a mediocre performer in everyday use and is not a car we'd recommend.

The Caliber patterned its chunky styling after the Magnum station wagon, Durango SUV, and Caravan minivan. It's a bold and imaginative design. Thick bumpers, swelling fenders, a tall roof, and a sloping hatch are most fetching with the R/T trim's polished chrome 18-inch wheels. The standard 17s are unimpressive. The blackout trim surrounding the rear hatch glass that extends upward along the roof performs a visual trick to make the roofline appear lower and more coupe-like than it is. Overall, though, the Caliber is not a handsome thing.
The Caliber's interior might be one of the world's worst places to sit. Brittle, hard, and sharp plastics line every surface, and it doesn't matter if you choose the cheapest or most expensive Caliber—which costs over 20 grand. The fit and finish are poor. The black on white gauges look good, as do the silver-painted climate controls and the silver center stack. But compared to rivals from Ford and Mazda, Dodge appears to have cut corners everywhere it could.

Three engines are available. The base SE and midlevel SXT have a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 148 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. They pair with a 5-speed manual transmission, which is superior to the laggy, noisy behavior from the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that comes with the 2.0-liter engine, an option on either trim. That engine delivers 158 hp and 141 lb-ft. Front-wheel drive is the only choice unless you find an R/T, which brings all-wheel drive, a CVT, and a 2.4-liter version of that 4-cylinder, good for 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. Every Caliber but the R/T feels slow, in part because it's a heavier car than sedan and hatch rivals with similar engine output. Handling is also poor considering the Caliber's small size, with low grip and languid steering response. The R/T is better, as it comes with a stiffer suspension and larger tires. You won't feel the refined ride of a Ford Focus. Road noise pours into the cabin.
Fuel economy is EPA-rated (and adjusted to modern estimates) at 24 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined for the 1.8-liter models with the manual. The automatic CVT with the 2.0-liter engine returns 23/27/24. The all-wheel-drive R/T with the 2.4-liter engine provides 20/24/22.

There are some unique innovations to an otherwise shabby interior. A "Chill Zone" on the passenger-side dashboard opens up an air-conditioned bin large enough for four 20-ounce bottles. The front passenger seat can fold down. Out back is a rechargeable flashlight that stows in the roof.
But the Caliber isn't as roomy as it appears. The sloping roof and high seating position limit headroom for rear passengers, and their legroom is sparse. The doors don't open wide enough, as those large fenders block ingress. The steering wheel does not telescope. At least the front seats are supportive and the controls are simple to operate. Cargo space is good, however, at 19 cubic feet or 48 with the rear seats folded. A trailering package adds wiring and an engine oil cooler, but no hitch.

Standard on SE trims are a four-speaker CD stereo with an aux jack, folding seats, and manual everything. The SXT brings power windows, power mirrors, keyless entry, air conditioning with the drink cooler, and an AC power outlet. Most of these features are optional on the SE, in addition to Sirius radio, a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics stereo, and six-disc CD changer. More options include cruise control, a moonroof, compass, outside temperature gauge, garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather, heated front seats, and Bluetooth phone connectivity. The R/T has most of these items as standard.

Dual front airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and front/rear head curtain airbags come standard, but front side airbags are not offered. Traction control and stability control are also unavailable. Anti-lock brakes are optional on SE and SXT trims but standard on the R/T. Crash-test ratings are the Caliber's strong suit. It scored five out of five stars for frontal crash and side crash tests (and each for driver and passenger) conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated the Caliber its top Good rating in a frontal crash but only Marginal for the side crash test because of a greater potential for injuries to the driver's head and neck.

The 2007 Caliber has a base price of $14,135 for the SE, and it increased to $20,230 for the R/T AWD, before options. Given the poor-quality interior, awkward styling, and underwhelming performance, we can't recommend shopping for a Caliber unless the price is unmatchable elsewhere.

I love the Caliber. So much room inside for moving stuff! Big enough back there to drop the seats and put a double air mattress in it and lay down quite comfortably. I camp in mine...its my camper on wheels!! Even a 12 volt plug between the seats so you can pump the mattress up and have a bed in 5 minutes or less. The front passenger seat back folds down, giving you a perfect spot for your lantern and what have you that you need right by your hands!! Not only that but the seats themselves are quite comfortable for a long drive. It has great pick up, only a 4 cylinder so less on gas. If you get the speaker package, which a lot of them have, the stereo is awesome for a stock car stereo...I rock in this thing!!! Reliable and fun to drive!! Great extra features if youre lucky!! Love my caliber!!! So much, in fact that its my 3rd one!! I keep going back to it because I love its versatility!!!Sep 23, 2021

I love this car. The leg room is outstanding for a compact. the seats fold down for storage that is roomy, the CVT transmition makes it fuel efficient, and the stereo system in it stock is fantastic. The ride is smooth, and the control is very respondent. There are plenty of bells and whistles in the standard model (refrigerator, thermometer, satellite radio, Aux port, AC plug) (AC plugs are the plugs that you use to plug in electronics at your house). The car is great. The only part about this car is this version does not go fast ( 0-60 in around 8 sec) its not bad but the srt4 version is the sports version, nit the sxt, I just want to point that out.May 26, 2015

Bought car used and has been great. Had some front issues with ball joints, but once replaced everything has been great. Very cheap to repair and no major issues. Overall like the car and good value for what we could afford.Apr 22, 2015

I have the SXT model with 4 cylinder 2.0. There are no complaints at this time :) The car is great on gas, plenty of cargo space, neat extras like a beverage chiller, Boston Acoustics 9-speaker system, Sirius satellite radio, sliding sunroof, and adjustable sliding arm rest. I bought this car as a first car for my daughter and it was a perfect fit. Easy to drive, easy to park and loaded with a lot of features. The all wheel drive gave her more confidence when driving in the snow. The front and side airbags let me breathe a little easier when she was out driving to school, work or just around with her friends. I have owned this car for about 3 months now and it has been fantastic, no complaints about performance except power. And the gas mileage is fantastic. avg 29-30 mpg. Love this car inside and out. I'm always thinking of adding a turbo into the engine however that is just me wanting to experiment. For my age at 20 years old in school and my current pay from my job, this car is extremely practical and will only let go of it if I have to.Oct 30, 2013

It is a great car/hatchback/crossover(or what ever kind of vehical it is). I enjoy driving it, especially since it is the 5 speed manual. My only fear is that it is coming up on the milage for the netorious transmision problems!May 11, 2012

miles per gallon. Has a upgraded speaker system,
radio controls on the steering wheel, heated seats
and a moon roof. It drives well and gets good gas

Quick, attractive, and nimble. KTP Wheels, Toyo Proxes tires, Polk audio system, wireless dvd, and built in water bottle cooler. THe car is roomy, comfortable, and the perfect size for driving in traffic. Excellent fuel mileage, and extremely reliable. The cvt transmission makes the car very smooth.Mar 28, 2010

Whats not to love?
Good power, good utility, good gas mileage.
This car gets looks at traffic lights and it has a ton of ulility as well. Love the 17" rims as well. This car is a jewel. I would love it more if was AWD.Feb 15, 2010

No-nonsense practical car. Cheap and cheerful! Lots of cargo space when needed. Good headroom for tall passengers. Very good road handling due to 17-in rims. I love the appearance of this car. It's very aggressive looking. It comes with a 4 cylinder though, so don't expect too much. The interior is very clean and modern looking. This is the second best car I've owned. I only say that cause my T-bird had a V8, lol. In the 2 years of ownership I can't complain about a thing. All of the gadgets/features are amazing. I love the digital tire guage! The flashlight in the back is a nice feature too. The only gadget that isn't quite up to par would be the chill zone in the glove box. It might work in northern climates, but in Houston, it's just more storage. But I don't really care about that. The V4 keeps the gas bills down but doesn't detract from highway driving. roomy, hauls stuff, unique features. not the fastest thing, but handles well with the AWD. The plastics on the interior are a little annoying, but with a carbon fiber dash kit like mine, it looks pretty sleek. all blacked out, the car looks pretty aggressive in someone's rearview.Mar 16, 2009

Although the mileage isn't quite what the sticker said it would be (for in town only - it exceeds highway estimate), it's not bad.
For the price of the vehicle, it had the most "extras" and special features. It is extremely comfortable, even on very long trips, and very spacious for both front and rear passengers. I regularly have a 6'6" person in my back seat and he never complains about space.
It's fun to drive, even though I'm used to a bigger engine, the 4 cylinders perform nicely, even on steep inclines. I would buy this car all over again!!!!!Feb 20, 2009

I like the unique look to my vehicle and it drives great in the snow. Overall, it's a good safe vehicle. The only thing I have an issue with is, it's a gutless pig! It accelerates slowly but it has a torque conversion transmission so it's supposed to be I guess :P I like to tear through the snow with it!Jan 23, 2009

Compact, fuel efficient, very modern feel, little need for repairs, nice-looking interior with a mini fridge (very cool), fun to drive, accelerates decently, fierce exterior appearance, very little maintenance, an overall fun car to own, and drive. i would reccomend this car to any college student, or on the go person.Oct 31, 2008

Great little car, especially for gas mileage. Love the sporty look. Interior is a bit harder than my last car, but it is practical and easily accessible. For a car it's size, there is quite a bit of storage. Maintenance is low and I get about 27 to 31 mpg. For a 4 cylinder it has fairly good acceleration; slower when the air conditioner is on. If you want a car that is solid, reliable, comfy, spacious, runs well, goes when you need it, lots for your money then the caliber is for you.
I love this car, its got great personality and is a real head turner...
Love the look, has a real American muscle car look.
Diesel is amazing... quiet and quick.
Interior may appear plastic and bland but have you looked at a ford... not much different!!

Very versatile vehicle, love the hatchback. Love the elevated seats, rides like an suv. I have the stickshift and love the pickup and go. Very affordable vehicle, very fun to drive, gas milage is amazing. Interior does not stay very clean. The 2007 dodge caliber is a great car. It has great handling, the brakes are tight, and acceleration is awesome. The build quality is great, there's not a thing to worry about, this car will last. This is a great car. It is a lot of car for your dollar. Has lots of little extras that come standard. The cool box in the glove compartment does work to keep cold beverages cold. The rechargable flash light in the rear dome light is a great addition. Seats are really snug and comfortable. The placement of the gear shift is very comfortable. The cell phone/mp3 holder in the middle arm rest is a nice feature as well. The fuel economy is great. View point while driving is nice because you sit a little higher than the average car in the same class.Mar 26, 2008

Okay, this car looks good, and it has a lot of space to put your crap, but it's really pretty weak. I was disappointed. It really doesn't deserve the R/T badge.
