The first-generation Ford Focus continues into 2007 with minimal changes to its winning formula of fun, practicality, and efficiency. New for 2007 in some markets is a special badge that lets people know about its clean-burning engine.

The Focus has a very modern feel to its exterior design compared to the dumpy Ford Escort from the 1990s. The once-triangular headlights have been reshaped since the 2005 refresh. The sloping roof and high-mount taillights are special touches on the 2-door ZX3 and 4-door ZX5 hatchbacks. The ZX4 sedan and ZX5 wagon are plainer, except the ZX4 ST, which can be ordered with the Street Performance Package's tall rear wing and other bumper, grille, and fender mods. Only 2007 Focus models sold in California wear the "PZEV" badge on the trunk, which signifies compliance with the state's Partial-Zero Emissions Vehicle program.
The interior is not as exciting as the exterior or to the Focus that Ford sells in Europe. It's a basic, no-frills arrangement.

A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 136 horsepower and 133 pound-feet of torque. This is a front-wheel-drive car with a 5-speed manual transmission and optional 4-speed automatic. The ZX4 ST is manual-only and has a 2.3-liter engine with 151 hp and 154 lb-ft. It also comes with a stiffer suspension and unique 16-inch alloy wheels. Some of us miss the former 2004 SVT, which had more power and grip, but this is still way better than most compact sedans.
Every Focus model has a suspension primarily tuned by Ford's European division. It has accurate steering, good control, and impressive ride quality. The independent rear suspension is rare in this class, and it excels at making the car more nimble and reactive while minimizing this layout's inherent intrusion into the cabin space. This alone makes the Focus such a great-handling compact car. If you must choose the automatic transmission, know it can be sluggish to react. The manual, however, has the feel and efficiency that reward you the more miles you drive.

In most small cars, you'll sit low to the floor. But in the Focus, you sit up higher like in a small crossover. Ford calls this "Command Seating." You'll call it easier to enter and exit the vehicle. The driver's seat is firm and supportive. Manual height adjustment comes standard, but a steering wheel that tilts and telescopes does not.
The backseat in the ZX3 and ZX5 hatches isn't a great place for anyone for too long. Choose the ZX4 sedan or ZX5 wagon for more headroom. The wagon rivals the space of a small SUV like the Escape, with 36 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 74 cubic feet when folded. Both hatch models have 18 and 40 cubic feet, respectively. The sedan's trunk measures 15 cubic feet and the seats fold for more room.
There are two cupholders in the center console, but the door pockets can't accommodate larger bottles. Place your sunglasses in the overhead console and use the pull-down cubby to the left of the steering wheel for extra storage. Gauges are easy to read and the controls are simple.

You can buy a really cheap Focus S, but beware how bare-bones it is: crank windows, manual locks, manual mirrors, no keyless entry, no air conditioning. There's a manual seat-height adjustment and a CD stereo included as standard equipment. The SE adds all the basic necessities. The SES brings a tilt/telescoping leather steering wheel with stereo controls, a six-disc CD changer, tachometer, fog lights, and 16-inch alloy wheels instead of the 15-inch steel wheels and plastic hubcaps. The sporty ST adds a trunk-lid spoiler, unique 16-inch alloys, chrome exhaust tip, special rocker panels, heated side mirrors, a leather shift knob, and ST-specific interior trim. These upper trims can also be ordered with leather upholstery, a moonroof, heated front seats, an alarm, and a Sony stereo with a subwoofer.

Traction control and anti-lock brakes are unavailable on the base S and optional on all other trims. Front side airbags are optional on all trims. Head curtain airbags, stability control, and rear head restraints are unavailable on all trims. Crash tests could be better. The 2007 Focus scored a Poor in the side-impact test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and three out of five stars for the driver in a similar test by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In frontal crash tests, the Focus hatch scored a lower four-star rating for the driver than the sedan, which scored five. In an IIHS frontal crash test, the Focus sedan scored the top Good.

The 2007 Focus starts at $14,130 for a ZX3 S and rises to $18,145 for a ZXW SES. Fuel economy is EPA-estimated at 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined for all models with the manual transmission. Automatic models are 22/29/25. The ST is 20/28/23. Do not buy a base S unless you accept that trim's lack of basic safety and convenience features. The SE and SES trims blend style and performance better than most cars in the compact segment, and the ST will satisfy driving enthusiasts.

I bought a 2007 Focus ST (duratec 23 engine) new simply to save money on car payments for a while. Surprisingly, I have had this car for almost 5 yrs now and it's paid off. Talk about saving money and I've enjoyed the car too. Despite it's quirks, such as uncomfortable front seats and cheap materials, the car shines in many ways. In fact, I like to think I have cheated the system with this car, because it costs so little to own and is so much fun to drive. The 5-sp has an excellent feel to it, one of the best I have ever driven, feeling better than many sports cars. You plenty of torque to start in 2nd without stalling from the more powerful 2.3 engine. The car is very nimble (very light weight thanks to cheap materials :) and handles excellent with the ST performance package. There are many aftermarket parts available to improve it even further. I am very pleased with this car and if you can find a used 2007 Focus duratec 23 with low miles, I highly recommend it. Jul 08, 2012

I bought my focus used but have no had any problems with it yet besides
the usual wear and tear that comes from driving it every where and then

Great build quality, awesome performance and handling, this car has 225bhp and just accelerates with ease, value for money as BMW's and Audi's in the same bracket would be 5k more.
Fuel is quite poor, but what do you expect for 5 cylinder 2.5 litre turbocharged lump. Interior is very stylish with front Recaro seats, Bluetooth stereo with ipod connection and keyless entry.
Overall a very nice car to drive and own, go out and buy 1, you will not be dissapointed.Nov 06, 2011

Solidly built Ford. Thick sheetmetal and very reliable car. It has a german-Ford feel. For long travels, it can be uncomfortable due to the firm seats. Nice scratch resistant dashboard although the plastics feel abit cheap. The suspension is also very good. Fuel economy is great at around 8kms/literOct 30, 2011

paint is chiped a bit and the interior is good gas is grest 540 km to a tank it never let me down and it would never break down besifes in in thewinter

Not a bad car. I would suggest an automatic if I were to own another. The manual transmission was fun to drive though. Had a couple of setbacks while I owned this car, but they were covered by warranty. Not a great car in the snow, it gets stuck easily.Mar 05, 2011

Decent mpg's, although Ford was building cars in the 80's that got better.

Good economical car, very soild. 35K miles and no rattles or squeaks. It's a 4cyl auto, typical performance, nothing earth shattering. Amazed at how much stuff I can fit in this car though. And for a 2 door, the back seat passengers are surprisingly comfy!
8/27/2010 - almost 4 years after buying this car I still LOVE IT!! 53K miles, getting ready to replace the front brakes and rotors. Gas mileage has been off this summer and will get this evaluated. Still a solid car and I love her!Jun 24, 2009

I had this Focus as a rental car for about 4 weeks in
Summer 2008. I originally wanted a hatchback or
small wagon, because I had to do business in
several locations in France and Germany, and as an
engineer I carry some heavy toolboxes.
Hatchbacks weren't available, so I had a choice of
this or a Renault convertible. I took the Focus, and
it was awesome!
The engine is a bit weak for the heavy car, but it
cruises at 120 mph easily if no big grades are
involved. Even with the roof down, it's quiet enough
at speed to use the bluetooth handsfree. (with the
wind deflector up)
Excellent Sony stereo.
I ended up doing more than 10,000 km in this car,
and the seats are definitely good enough to still be
relaxed after sitting in it all day.
Fuel economy wasn't great - 9L/100km on average
- but that was mostly fast driving.
Handling is not as good as in the hatchback, but
still big fun. The steering is communicative and the
5-speed manual gearbox slick - a 6 speed with a
taller top gear would be better though.
With a diesel engine, this would be a pretty

i love how quick off the line it is. It accelerates powerfully although the braking is a little weak for the power of the motor. The drivers door has a rattle that the dealer reckons they can't hear but it drives me nuts. The door sounds like it flexes when I go around a hard corner. the interior and exterior styling is just gorgeous. The electric orange colour is vivid and stands out for miles. I love my Focus. It has nearly 70,000 miles on it and it is still running like it did when I drove it off the dealer's lot. The performance is acceptable for a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder and the handling is excellent for an econobox. It sometimes feel as though I'm driving something sportier the way it grips corners. It also feels like a much larger car that it looks from the outside. The interior space in my car is comparable to that of most mid-sized family sedans of the mid-90s. My Focus is solid as a rock, the only problem I have is an occasional squeak when I'm going over one of the 5 million speedbumps in my apartment complex, but other than that, nothing. My car hasn't needed any repair work so far mostly because I have taken my car to a Blue Oval certified shop every time I needed anything done including oil changes, tire rotations, etc. As far as cost of ownership, this car has truly spoiled me. Even when gas was $4 a gallon, I was paying less than $30 to fill up. It has excellent gas mileage, so getting gas is a once-a-week thing for me which usually average out to $12-$15 to fill up from a quarter of a tank. The Focus is definitely a fun car to drive, all I can say is go to your local Ford dealer and ask to test drive one. Handles better than a Volkswagen. Trust me, I've driven a lot of cars. Performs like a sports car, but has plenty of room for lots of stuff. Overall cost is very low. I drive very aggressively and get over 25mph. My Focus is so fun to drive, that when I send this one to car heaven I'm planning on getting another!Sep 30, 2008

The car drives like a dream, if feels stable, safe and at the same time very sporty and aggressive! The style of the wheels complement the curves of the body. I have been doing about 9.5 km/l since i bought it, did approx 4000km's. The interior is very executive but at the same time also a bit plain, it doesn't have leather seats as you would come to expect from this model. Being a tiptronic also helps especially when you sit in traffic, there the car really drives smoothly.I would recommend buying one.Aug 19, 2008

It uses very little gas. Has enough trunk space. The transmission had been repaired under warranty. So did the radio. It has good passing ability. Sometimes there is a squeek in the car when its really cold outside. The heated seats are awesome in the winter.Jul 09, 2008

The silky 2.5L V5 Turbo engine kicking out a solid 225BHP and 236 Lbs of torque means this motor makes effortless progress, the exhaust note under acceleration sounds fantastic. The ride is comfortable at the expanse of the handling, this hot hatch is more at home covering hundreds of motorway and B-road mile than on a track, perfect for the cross continent road trip :-)

I have the 2007 ST, it is not the Euro spec ST (as in Volvo 2.5 turbo), but it's powered by Mazda developed (2.3). Its power and specially low rpm torque is more than adequate, better still can be easily improved. The car handles great and is very comfortable to drive at high speeds. It's very stable and responsive (the euro spec ST & SVT heritage helps here). Brakes are also very good with 4 wheel disk and ABS.
The winter package adds traction control & heated seats (toasty).
The optional Sony speaker stereo w/ the sub sounds great.
Overall I found the car very well optioned for the price.
It's a normal every day car, but they don't have to be boring. This one is surely not--I look forward to drive it as much as possible!Jan 21, 2008

I bought this car back in February of 2007. It had 20 miles on it, 13 of which were my test drive. It now has almost 10,000 on it and I have enjoyed every one of them. Not a real fancy interior but it's easy to keep clean. It handles like it's on rails, stops on a dime and is pretty impressive on accelleration for a small car. It has all the power features 16" machined alloy wheels w/ Pirelli P6s. And it get great mileage. I have been very pleased with this vehicle and would recommend it to anyone. But sadly, they quit making this one with no plans for another in the future. Glad I got one before they were gone!Jan 05, 2008

AC blowing hot air on driver side, and cold air on the passenger side.
I had hot air coming out of all four vents. Recharged it and after recharging only to discover hot air coming out of the two driver side vents, and cold air coming out the two passenger side vents. Could this be the blend door/ actuator?

Radio (stereo) stopped working
Radio stopped working. Fuses are good. Clock will work and display when "Menu" is pressed. No other display. Will not turn on. Does not seem to have any power at ratio connector power pin.

Audible clicking, lights flickering?
My 2007 Ford Focus SE has been running great but all of a sudden it makes this audible clicking noise while I'm driving and the lights flicker with each click. The battery light then comes on, then goes off. The worst it got was while it was doing the clicking, the speedometer stopped working, the lights wouldn't work and the door kept locking/unlocking repeatedly. I pulled over, had someone check the connections and it worked fine again. Now it's starting to click again. I really don't have the money to see a mechanic...
