You too can be your own video game hero. Or just play one on the road as you sit behind the wheel of the 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, the consumer version of Subaru's WRC rally-winning racer. Most of the changes this year involve more fine-tuning to enhance performance. What makes this race car stand out is the fact that it's also a four-door sedan with a fairly roomy trunk, so it serves well for open-road ripping or city travel.
A monster turbo 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder DOHC Boxer engine makes 293-hp in the 2006 WRX STi. This is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Changes this year are a more refined 41/59 torque distribution and a new mechanical limited slip differential in place of the previous hydraulic one. Outside, the WRX STi gets the new wing-like trisectional Subaru mesh grille. The huge hood scoop has been reduced somewhat, helping with visibility, and a new roof vane is modeled after the rally car. Wheels are still silver or gold.
Coming in sedan only, the STi offers a lot of interior conveniences too, while still trying to keep the car lightweight. The aluminum body helps with that as well. Power locks, windows, and mirrors, leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel, cruise control, daytime running lights, and a front console are all standard, as is ABS brakes and dual front and side airbags.
All-wheel drive capability, instant acceleration performance, outlandish speeds, combined with tight cornering and smooth handling, make the 2006 WRX STi a winner with owners. They love the looks, and say it is the most fun they've had behind the wheel. Negatives include rear seats that don't fold, some road noise, a desire for more features and options, and disappointment it doesn't come in a two-door coupe model.

Performance is great especially for drivers who want to make the transition to track. Not a very practical daily driver unless you have drove manual transmission your whole life. Perfect road car for back country road driving, not for passes at the drag strip. Keep this car out of the turner crowd unless that is your passion, and you have deep pockets. Performance- Amazing. Great Power, great handling, beautiful exhaust note, very comfortable.
Build Quality- Zero repairs but remember it can be hard to keep and opposed engine from burning a bit of oil later in its life due to the pistons sitting in the oil. Its common and very little.
Appearance- I personally love the spoiler and hood scoop. Loved the blue interior seats and carpet. The gauges looked really good at night.
Cost of Ownership- Pricey due to insurance and premium gas. Poor fuel mileage. And since its fun you tend to go through tires and brakes. You just cant help it.
Fun Factor- Through the roof. Greatest AWD in my opinion for your buck. But be prepared for everyone (including the nice lady in the mini van) trying to race you at every stoplight when they see the spoiler. I call it spoileritus.Mar 21, 2011

Need I say much more? It's fast accelerating, quick to stop, and has a
great top end speed. I hit 152mph in 5th gear at 5600rpms. Its build is
top quality, it is pleasing to the eyes, It gets great mileage, and
maintenance is cheap. Best of all, it is a blast to drive. I will never own
another kind of car. I can drive offroad, in the snow, in the rain, and
anywhere my life takes me, with the AWD. When the turbo kicks in at
around 3350rpms, there is a sudden rush, as the car lurches forward,

I love everything about it. The performance is unbeatable
for the price. The interior is kind of cheap-o but there are
no rattles or anything inside. A little pricey on gas because
it uses premium only and it burns through it with spirited
driving, but all in all it's worth it. Throw on an aftermarket
exhaust and a pro-tune and you'll be smoking most cars on

Even completely stock it is just as much fun as my Stage 2 2004 Impreza WRX. The torque difference between the 2.0 and the 2.5 is incredible! And the fact that I don't have to worry about blowing up the gear box like you do in the 5 Speeds is enough in itself!Dec 23, 2009

Fast entering and exiting a corner and in the straights inbetween, even when its rainining. Phenomenal grip, excellent reliability, distinctive sound. Excellent performance from a standstill or a roll all wrapped in an aggressive exterior.

Needs more power. Should probaby look into new tires first. after that I will look into a perrin stealth front mount intercooler. not sure what i will do after that first, either a bigger turbo or maybe putting all hard lines in or possibly a header. but as it is now i have an HKS Hi-Power turbo back exhaust, cobb accessport (tuned for stage 2 on 93 octane; peak boost has been 21.9 psi), samco BOV, and SPT cold air intake. Overall the car is nothing like I have ever driven. Performance wise the STi is mind blowing the awd is very forgiving on the tight corners. The build quality isn't the greatest the car and the road noise is very loud, but then again it's not built for grand ma!

Amazing handling, AWD FTW. The power band is excelent, with boost coming on early in the RPM's. Handling is excelent, letting you feel what the road is doing and letting you know if you are to fast. Also a very forgiving car if you come in to hot she will let you fix the situation. Small problems ive had were spun bearing, no biggy just a 3 grand fix and some warped rotors, only about 500 bucks, and this wierd ass rattle that makes me want to shoot someone. Nov 08, 2008

Performance - Wonderful. The only problem is the low RPM. I got a larger RPM on a Corvette than on this thing.
Build Quality - Well. It is a Rally car. What do you thing? :D
Appearance - Everything is great but the rims are bad and ugly.
Cost of Ownership - It doesn't need repairs very often. It need gas. TO MUCH GAS.

ok where do i start, the acceleration is amazing just a little sluggish from about 2500rpms down but from there up it just pulls hard. braking couldn't be better for the price from a stock car. handing is its main weakness against evos stock for stock but its because its made with softer suspension for better a daily driver but still handles very well. build quality is very good subarus are known to last forever and the transmissin in this thing is a beast. it looks amazing on both outside and inside. the blue interior is crazy and the gold wheels are so unique. gas is alright its not the best but what do expect its 300hp out of 4-cyl so it still gets decent mpg for the power. and as far as fun, well it's just amazing you have to try it to see for yourself.Sep 08, 2008

The Bad: A little ugly (in my opinion), bad gas mileage (read horrible), no real luxuries ie sunroof or sat nav, big rear wing sometimes obscures mirror vision and attracts teenage boy racers, ride is very harsh.
The Good: It's freaking fast. In any direction. With Cobb upgraded ECU and full exhaust system it makes approx 350 hp / 380 tq with the worlds best AWD system. The sheer violence with which it can rip through a corner will leave you speechless. Wet, dry, snow, gravel.. it doesn't matter, its simply doesn't care. It was built with one purpose, and that is to go insanely fast in any environment, on any road or track you want to put under it. It does this, and still has comfy seats, 4 doors, a nice trunk, and a nice Recaro baby seat for my kiddo to ride along.Aug 20, 2008

I love the car i drove one for autocross and it was amazing it was dyno-ed at 653WHP. it was heavily modified so of course it performed well. one of the best things about the car is the tone of the boxer engine it has a beautiful deep growl to it at idle and turns to an all out roar at higher rpms. i dont think there is any thing i personally dont like about the car.May 09, 2008

Not the fastest car out there, but definitely one of the most fun to drive. Even more so after the quick ratio steering rack + stiffer shocks/springs + GroupN chassis bushings. this car is simply amazing. lots of power , a ton of torque and handling that can pull enough g's to push you in to the seat. i cant find a flaw in this car, it can stick to the pavement and take almost any car on the street in a straight line or in the corners(stock compared to other stock vehicles) and can out perform anything on ice, snow and gravel. in my opinion it is the best bang for your buck out there. i have even had friends who owned cars such as an 06 twin turbo bmw 335i sell there car for this sti, now that has to say something!Jan 02, 2008

Overheating
So I replaced my radiator, coolant overflow tank, and thermostat and bled the system and my car still overheats. It had about 110k miles on the motor. At first my overflow tank would bubble and go everywhere. I bought some blue devil headgasket sealer and put it in and my car still was overheating and I'm about to add coolant because it looks pretty low but idk what it could be. I saw some white smoke coming out of the overflow tank but it smelled like coolant so I shut the motor off. Any ideas? From what I've been told it's a headgasket leak but it doesnt seem bad like the car runs and sounds good but it just overheats.
