The 2006 GMC Savana Cargo 1500 Van is the half-ton version of the commercial hauler, holding up to 267 cubic feet and with a towing capacity of 5900 pounds. The rear-wheel drive van comes with a standard 4.3-liter, 195-hp V6 with 260 lb-ft of torque, but can be outfitted with a 5.3-liter, 295-hp V8. Riding on 16-inch wheels and all-season tires, the 2006 Savana Cargo 1500 is only available in the regular 135-inch wheelbase and features pickup-like stabilizer bars and a front independent and rear live axle suspension. Stabilitrak, ABS brakes, and dual front airbags are standard.
Equipment includes intermittent wipers, power steering, a radio, and an air conditioner. Cupholders, pockets, and a front power outlet add extra passenger convenience. But the 2006 Savana Cargo 1500 is all about cargo hauling. A passenger side door swings out, but can be replaced by a 60/40 opening. Plenty of option packages add power features, a CD player, a power driver's seat, rear climate control, a backup signal, a sliding side door for both passenger and driver's side, a swing-out rear window, and plenty of other luxuries. Drivers like the power and cargo capacity, but think the interior materials should be improved.

The 2006 GMC Savana Cargo 2500 Van is the regular wheelbase (135 inches) version of the commercial hauler. This year it gets a new engine cover and underbody heat shield, as well as an optional engine. Standard is a 4.8-liter, 285-hp V8, but the 2006 Savana Cargo 2500 can be equipped with a 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8 or a new 6.6-liter, 250-hp turbodiesel V8 that delivers 460 lb-ft of torque. All are matched with a 4-speed auto tran. Holding 267 cubic feet of cargo, the van can tow 10,000 pounds with the optional trailer hitch.
The rear-wheel drive 2006 Savana Cargo 2500 Van offers 4-wheel ABS brakes, a truck-like front independent and rear live axle suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, 16-inch wheels, and dual front airbags. A locking rear differential is optional. The interior is minimalist, with a radio, air conditioning, power steering, cupholders, a front power outlet, and a cargo light for the bed. Options add power features, including front seats, heated mirrors, cruise control, remote entry, rear climate control, CD player, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and turn signals in the mirrors. Its 15/20 mpg, while not great, is pretty good for a large van, and it earns five stars in frontal impact tests.

The main differentiator of the 2006 GMC Savana Cargo 2500 Extended Van is its extra 20 inches of wheelbase, meaning nearly 50 more cubic feet of cargo space (317 cu. ft.). Otherwise, it's much like the regular wheelbase 2500. Engine choices start with a 4.8-liter, 285-hp V8, which can be replaced by either a 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8, or a new Duramax 6.6-liter, 250-hp turbodiesel V8 with 460 lb-ft of torque. Stability is helped not only the Stabilitrak system, but by 16-inch wheels with all-season tires, front and rear stabilizer bars, and an independent front and live axle rear suspension. Dual front airbags help earn five stars in crash tests, and 4-wheel disc brakes are complemented by 4-wheel ABS. Options include a locking rear differential, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and mirrors with turn signals.
This is no luxury van. It's a hauler, and so the inside offers only air conditioning, intermittent wipers, power steering, a front power outlet, and cupholders. A radio, cassette, or CD player are extra. A hinged passenger side door can be replaced with a sliding door or 60/40 opening, and a driver's side door is also optional. If you need a little more luxury, you can add power features, a power driver's seat, heated mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, privacy glass, a remote control, and rear climate control. Equipped with the 4.8 V8, the 2006 Savana Cargo 2500 Extended can haul nearly 10,000 pounds.

The 2006 GMC Savana Cargo 3500 Van gets a new engine choice this year, a Duramax 6.6-liter, 250-hp turbodiesel V8 with 460 lb-ft of torque. This is in addition to the standard 4.8-liter V8 with 285-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, or the optional 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission. Equipped with a truck-like suspension, 16-inch wheels with all season tires, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, front and rear stabilizer bars, and dual front airbags, the 2006 Savana Cargo 3500 earns five-star crash ratings. A locking rear differential, mirror turn signals, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror are extra.
The rear-wheel drive, one-ton cargo van holds up to 267 cubic feet of stuff and tows up to 10,000 pounds. Rear double doors open out, and a hinged passenger side door can be replaced with a sliding door. Intermittent wipers, air conditioning, power steering, and some convenience features such as cupholders and a power outlet are the bulk of the standard equipment in the two-seater. Packages add power features, cruise control, a CD player and upgraded audio, trailer hitch, heated mirrors, rear climate control, and keyless entry. Class-leading power is its biggest selling point, while low 15/20 mpg and cheap interior are downsides.

And if you can't fit the kitchen sink, you can certainly tow it and 10,000 more pounds with the optional trailer hitch. In 2006, besides a new engine cover and underbody heat shield, the Savana Cargo 3500 Extended gets an optional 6.6-liter, 250-hp V8 with 460 lb-ft of torque. A 4.8-liter, 285-hp V8 is standard, and a 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8 is optional. A 4-speed auto tran is standard. The rear-wheel drive cargo van seats two and comes with dual front airbags, 4-wheel ABS brakes, a truck suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, and Stabilitrak. A locking rear differential, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and mirrors with turn signals are optional.
Daytime running lights are included, however, along with intermittent wipers, air conditioning, power steering, and cupholders. No radio, though. For that or a CD player, you'll pay extra. Other add-ons include power features, a power driver's seat, cruise control, remote entry, tilt steering, heated mirrors, and rear climate control. The only cargo van in its class with all-wheel drive, the 2006 GMC Savana Cargo 1500 AWD combines sturdy road performance with plenty of hauling capacity -- up to 267 cubic feet of cargo space, and able to tow up to 6500 pounds. The all-wheel drive comes only with the 1500 and is matched to a 5.3-liter, 295-hp V8 with 330 lb-ft of torque and a 4-speed auto tran. Standard performance features include a limited slip center differential and full-time four-wheel drive, in addition to stabilizer bars, Stabilitrak, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, and dual front airbags.
With room for two, the 2006 Savana Cargo 1500 AWD is meant for work. The few standard features include 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, power steering, daytime running lights, intermittent wipers, and a front power outlet. A passenger side door can be supplemented with a driver's side door, and either one can be equipped as a sliding door or a 60/40 hinged opening. Option packages add power features, power front seats, a CD player, cruise control, rear climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, mirrors with turn signals, and a trailer hitch. Power and room supersede poor fuel economy and a plain interior.
