The heart of the 2005 Volkswagen Touareg V8 trim package was its 4.2-liter, 310-hp V8 engine, which was the same 4.2-liter used in the Audi A8 and A6. As you can image, it provided plenty of pep off the line and at highway speeds. It was linked to a six-speed automatic overdrive transmission, which was standard across the line.
Standard features for the Touareg included a power moonroof, power windows, remote power door locks, heated exterior mirrors, heated front bucket seats, leather and wood trim throughout the cabin, multi-zone climate control, automatic on/off headlights, front and side airbags, cruise control, daytime running lights, and an anti-theft alarm system. Traction control, stability control, descent control, front fog lights, full-time four-wheel drive, and anti-lock brakes were also standard.
To that, the V8 trim package added leather seats, which were power-adjustable in the front, and 18-inch wheels. Among the options for the V8 package were heated rear seats and a four-zone climate control system.
Drivers of the V8 Touareg were impressed with the vehicle's firm ride and its responsive handling. Among the negatives: it was "very thirsty" and the six-speed transmission had "overly short gearing," which sometimes made for jumpy shifting, especially on downshifts.
