For 2004, the Grand Cherokee received a facelift that included a restyled front fascia. Jeep expanded the Grand Cherokee line to five trims for 2004: Laredo, Limited, and Overland continue, and new Special and Freedom Editions trims were added.
A 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine comes standard on the Laredo, Special Edition, Freedom Edition, and Laredo. This inline six with overhead valves is rated at 195 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. The six-cylinder comes with a four-speed automatic. A 4.7-liter overhead-valve V8 that develops 235 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission is also available.
A high-output version of the 4.7-liter V8, with 265 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, is standard on Overland and optional on Limited, Special Edition, and Freedom Edition trims. The V8 comes with the five-speed automatic transmission plus Goodyear Wrangler Eagle ES P235/65R17 tires.
The Laredo, the base trim, comes with a good deal of standard equipment, including a six-speaker Infinity sound system with CD player, cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, tilt steering, cruise control, and power windows, mirrors, and locks.
The new two special-edition models are essentially packages added to the Laredo. The Special Edition features the monochromatic exterior design cues of the Limited model, plus fog lamps and an AM/FM/ cassette/10-disc CD audio system with Infinity speakers. Special Edition 4WD models are upgraded with the Quadra Trac II transfer case. The Freedom Edition adds high-back cloth seats with Jeep logo embroidery on driver's and passenger seat backs and chrome tow hooks.
More luxurious is the Limited model, which adds leather upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control, fog lights, a universal garage door opener, low-back bucket seats, and other features. A 10-way power adjustable driver's seat, a memory function for the driver's seat and mirrors, and other features are available in option packages.
The Overland adds satin-silver aluminum wheels, metallic-painted side rock rails, an exclusive Dark Slate suede interior with redwood burl accents and embroidered floor mats, a 10-disc CD changer, and an express-open power sunroof. Ceiling-mounted side-curtain airbags are standard.
Drivers applaud the 2004 Jeep Cherokee's safety and performance, pulling power and towing capacity, off-road ability, technology, comfort, and handling.
The paint appears to chip, however, and that certainly displeases owners. Gas mileage is also lower than drivers would like.
What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee express strong satisfaction with its reliability, comfort, and off-road capabilities. Many appreciate the powerful I6 engine and spacious interior, making it a great choice for families and adventurous drivers alike. However, some drivers noted that fuel economy is a downside, and a few mentioned issues with certain interior features over time."
I ran my 2004 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder for 217,000 miles and still going with no problem
November 14, 2022I have owned 2 Jeep Grand Cherokees and they have been great cars. They are fun to drive and very reliable. They utilize the legendary Jeep straight 6 engine which is bullet proof. No regrets with the care at all.
August 11, 2014Very comfortable and easy to drive, pulls through all kinds of inclement weather, durable, can load it up with alot of people and things. Always starts up and is ready to tackle the days challenges on smooth or rough pavement.

March 26, 2011This is my 7th Jeep, and 5th Grand Cherokee. The 4.0L I6 is great, even if it's not a powerhouse, it's darn near unbreakable. Fuel mileage is excellent for a vehicle of this type. I've gotten as high as 24, and average around 19 MPG. The 4WD system is unbeatable, and it will go thru terrain that would stop other "soccer mom" SUVs dead in their tracks. Overall, I'm very pleased.
June 18, 2009Solid SUV. Goes wherever I need it to, can carry whatever I need it to.
April 15, 2008great vehicle - dependable and solid in all weather situations. great utility - able to carry people in comfort as well as large items inside the cabin or on roof. More than enough power for multitude of requirements and highway or local cruising.
July 28, 2014Love the style, the power and the acceleration. Handling could be better, but it is NOT a sports car. Bought it used from a dealer who didn't disclose everything. Had to involve the Ohio state's attorney general to get a settlement. Bu the vehicle (once I had the problems repaired) has proves to be competent both on and off road. MPG is not great, but for a 2 ton, 4WD SUV, it's better than most. And a 6,500# towing capacity makes it very useful!
May 24, 2013Got this car with 60000mi and one previous owner 2 grand under blue book. 4wd is amazing as is the off road handling. Interior is luxurious for what I paid. Have had some repairs of electrical work, but not terribly expensive.
February 16, 2013Safe, economical, comfortable vehicle. Excellent in all weather, spacious cargo area and convenient interior. Performs great, it's a no-nonsense vehicle great for family transportation to school, work, etc. as well as long road trips, state to state. Have loved this car!!
March 3, 2011Over all it serves its purpose. Nice power when I need it and a pretty god ride for a jeep.I'm glad I went for the V8, you gotta love that sound. Handles and rides more like a truck which I like. Great for hauling the kids around town and the highway mileage is not too bad although it could always be better.
