The 2003 Lexus ES 300 was unchanged, after undergoing a complete redesign for the previous model year. In 2004 it would receive a new engine. For now, the ES had gained a new status within the Lexus lineup, finally relieved of its entry-level classification.
The new ES 300 featured more room and amenities than its predecessors, and the exceptional ride quality was of course unaltered. Sticker price reflected the revisions, as Lexus attempted to establish the ES as more of a peer of the LS 430.
For the last time, the ES 300 housed a 3.0 liter V-6. This engine made 210 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. The 0-60 mph mark remained at about eight and a half seconds. The engine utilized Toyota's Variable Valve Timing technology, which improved power, fuel efficiency, and emissions. Fuel economy was observed at 21/29 mpg. This third generation of ES also saw a transmission grade, from a four to a five-speed automatic.
While the ES image had been revised, one problem remained in the eyes of many drivers: power. The ES series power plants had evolved from a very modest 156 horsepower engine, but performance data had not seen dramatic change. Owners felt that a car priced comparably to European performers should be more capable. Granted, the "it's a Camry" comments had largely dissolved from the user reviews, but the underpowered ES still needed to validate its sticker price on the road. Once again, a new ES was a year away.
What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2003 Lexus ES are very positive about their experience. They particularly love its smooth and comfortable ride, impressive fuel economy, and stylish design. Many appreciate its quiet engine and reliable performance, with several mentioning long-lasting durability even with high mileage. However, some drivers noted concerns with the transmission, weak brakes in adverse conditions, and occasional wind noise from door seals."
I just got this a few days ago, a replacement for my sad Jeep. So far, I love it. I can't vouch much for the long term reliability, but mine's a 2003 and nothing is wrong with it. Sometimes I can't tell if it's running, the engine is so quiet, the car rides extremely smooth, and averages about 25 mpg. It's also nice looking without being too flashy.
May 30, 2008Best sedan, Smooth, Comfortable, Leg Room Very Reliable,Stylish, Really well built. Quiet. Sound system is amazing. Smooth/classy ride. Very happy with this car. It has 160K Miles on it but still runs like new. Amazing Amazing Amazing Car
December 19, 2013The Lexus ES300 is a very reliable and safe car. It also has a sleek look to it. Lots of room on the inside for a midsize sedan for stretching out on long trips. Speaking of long trips, the ride is super smooth. This car is a top choice for a family car.

April 9, 2014The best car I have ever owned. I hope to have it a long time.
May 30, 2008Really like this car. Rides like a cloud. Awesome for road trips. Smooth, quiet, roomy, responsive on the highways .. great sound system. Excellent mileage... get as much as 31 mpg on the freeway, generally get 26 mpg in town. Dependable, but maintenance is normal but pricey. Weakness, the brakes in snow or rain. They work but you can tell by the sound it's the cars weakness. I don't want to work when I drive and this car takes care that I don't . Wish I would have put an invisible bra on the front of the car. Several long road trips and the front bumper paint is seriously chipped.
October 27, 2009i love the fuel economy and reliability of this car bought it when it had 173000 miles on it 5 months ago and now it has 187000 on it and still purrs like a great car. good for 4 people 5 is pushing it with 3 in the back. other than that its a great car
May 29, 2014Very good on gas!! Comfortable!! Quiet ride. Not that great on acceleration, but it is pretty quick. The interior is designed very nice, but I did add a wood dash trim to make it look richer.
July 9, 2008great car but lexus still needs to work on the transmisssion changing gear via cpu
December 16, 2007Good condition for its age. Happy with the value of the car
