The 2002 Ford Taurus followed up on its previous years' success by integrating some luxury touches into the standard features of its SE, SES, and SEL trims. Goodies like antilock brakes and power-adjustable brake pedals were added to the S-Series; for those who were buying the Taurus strictly for economy's sake, the base-level no-frills LX trim was reintroduced.
Once again, the Taurus was Ford's best-selling car. Whether it was in the form of a sedan or a wagon, buyers couldn't get enough of this longtime favorite. And thanks to the 2000 redesign, the Ford Taurus drove and looked better than ever.
The LX entry-level trim was offered only as a sedan; SE and SEL trims were available as both sedans and station wagons; and the SES was a deluxe sedan.
What owners say
"Overall, Taurus owners appreciate its reliability and comfort, especially for families and commuting. Many love its handling in snowy conditions and decent gas mileage, while some express dissatisfaction with sluggish performance and various minor issues, like electrical problems and interior quality. Drivers note that while it's a practical choice, especially for long trips, it's not particularly exciting to drive."
Owned this car about 4years - 2nd owner. I define the 2002 Ford Taurus as middle class luxury and a middle class price. It's a great car for the money. My Taurus has a few nice options like CD changer, moon roof, auto-on/off courtesy lights, driver's adjustable foot pedals, and the 24valve DOHC 3.0L Duratec V6 engine. One nice thing about the Taurus is that due to it's commonality on the streets you can easily find salvage parts if needed. Took advantage of this a couple of times when someone ran it over curbs and broke the wheels - easy to find in salvage yards Performance is good enough for a mid size sedan. Enough power to get onto freeways and pass with ease. Suspension works fine for moderately aggressive driving. Body and build quality seems good and the car does not rattle or squeak at 140Kmi. Repair problems and been acceptable up to around 120Kmi - Replaced three ignition coils at 80Kmi. Replaced A/C compressor at 90Kmi. Replaced water pump at 100kmi. 130Kmi - A/C evaporator sprang a small leak ; an expensive repair that requires removing the dashboard to get to the evaporator. Driver's seat leather developed some deterioration and tears.
December 5, 2009Performance is ok, accelerates and brakes great, handles well, hasn't needed any repairs as yet, but has an electrical issue I need to have looked at, hopefully not too catastrophic, look pretty good, but I like sportier styles, no repairs so far but gas mileage is what you'd expect for a 6 cylindar (not great). It drives pretty good and it kicks ass in the snow, 10 times better than any car I have ever owned, Love that! I would reccomend this for a commuter car, not for a fun car.
December 23, 2008IN the past 5 yrs i have owned it, i havent had to put much into it or replace anything mayjor. Has neevr left me on the side of the road and has great power under the hood> It gets great gas milege and it looks great for its age i would deffo buy another Taurus again down the road .

January 27, 2010This is really a nice car. I bought it new and drove it for 105,000. No problems. I was able to replace my brakes (rotors & pads) without any problems. This car rides like a Benz. Very roomy and comfortable
September 23, 2007ride was bumpier than my 03 sedan, but normal for the different suspension in the wagon. generally a good car, except for the power antenna not working.
March 3, 2020The Performance is average. Its not really made to race, its more of a family car. The build quality is great, everything works and is still running strong with only minor repairs. I love the appearance, its a very unique shape and very safe design. The gas mileage is good for a heavy 6 cylinder sedan, the maintenance is very regular. This car is not fun at all to drive. Its a cruiser, its made to get places comfortably not quickly.
September 6, 2009Very good family car. Great on long trips. We have just over 100,000 miles and it almost all original except for brakes and tires. Well made car I'd recommend to anyone. The only major complaint is that I'd like it to have more power, although it does get 30 to 32 mpg.
November 3, 2011So far i have had no problems. It actually is great on gas and fast. lol :) I got it at an awesome price for the year and mileage. The only thing is it has room so i can take people places.......lame
March 8, 2010like the comfortable ride , dislike weak transmission, very economical ,very inexpensive to fix,car handles very well ,manages to get around in bad weather quite impressively, the Taurus seems to be one of fords strongest car brand this car is a real workhorse dispite its setbacks it is a very great car to own
August 27, 2014acceleration is sluggish at first but only with mine as far as I know there is definately a kink in the cable, and if i accelerate too quickly it will stick the car will accelerate on its own over rev and almost blow the engine....other than that its and awesome car, not the best on gas mileage, looks clean inside and out, handles corners like a sports car.
