Its closest competition is the Ford Taurus, but the Dodge Intrepid has always been more of a full-size sedan due to its deceptively large interior. On the outside and under its hood, it is really more of a sports car, sure to satisfy on the open road.
In 2002, the Dodge Intrepid again changed its engine options. The SE base model came standard with the 2.7-liter, 200-hp V6, but now both the ES and R/T models featured the 3.5-liter V6 engine which rated either at 234-hp (ES) or 242-hp (R/T). Midyear, an SXT trim was introduced and would eventually replace the R/T. It featured the same 3.5 V6 engine. The 3.2-liter engine was dropped. The AutoStick auto/manual transmission was now only available in the R/T performance model, accounting for its higher horsepower rating. The R/T also offered tighter suspension and steering, performance-tuned exhaust, a rear spoiler, and chrome wheels to enhance the aggressive sports car exterior that formed the shell for the expansive family car interior.
Drivers love the way the Intrepid handles. With the 3.5 V6 engine, it is quite the racer, but handles more precisely and nimbly like a much smaller, sportier car. The best thing about the Intrepid is it's definitely fun to drive. Easy to read gauges, lots of leg and headroom, and deep trunk also rate high. Most unhappy owners complain about endless mechanical problems and the poorly-made 2.7 V6 engine that often needs to be rebuilt.

Been driving this one since it was brand new, and now have over 130,000 miles on it. Only had one repair needed so far, but it was a biggie. I wish Dodge still made these cars! Everything is so great: tons of room inside, huge trunk, plenty of power, good gas mileage, and it looks so good...
February 7, 2008I never had any major issues with my 02 Intrepid. It handled great in the snow and ice, one night I had to drive it over 40 miles in an ice storm and it never lost traction. It has a powerful engine strong trans and a very comfortable interior. Heat and a/c work amazingly.
May 24, 2015I love the fact that it was owned by Senor Citizens and well cared for. Driven slow and always had it's check ups,oil changes etc. Love the low mileage. Cold a/c & Stereo. Gets great gas mileage. Smooth ride. Great pick up (get up & go power).

March 11, 2011the performance is awesome milege is ok very very safe looks great handle awesome on or off road in snow or rain doesnt hydroplane good track car great slolom no maintnence cost really to speak of other than oil and gas
November 15, 2012I like how it drives, but hate how it pretty much spends more time getting worked on then driven! Overall a pretty decent vehicle, was my first car and is my current car. Would not recommend this vehicle to a friend looking to buy a car...
April 30, 2011The car has been great for the last 8 years, only minor issues. Had to change the radiator and the shift cable. Other than that just routine maintenence. Added an aftermarket radio to allow for an aux input. It gets 20 mpg in town and about 26 highway.
January 12, 2014This was an inexpensive car to purchase and has been very reliable. It was originally purchased for my daughter to take to college and she put most of the car's 138,000 miles on the odometer. After graduating she used the car in NYC for a year before returning it to mom and dad. It burns no oil and all features continue to function perfectly. 22 mpg overall with 27 on highway trips.
October 20, 2013I like this car because it is big and comfortable. However, it drives like a sports car. The handling is amazing for a car this size! I am used to bigger cars having all kinds of body roll but this just sets into the corners with no problem!
September 23, 2009the one i drove had broke down alot but i will say this is one of the fastest car i have ever driven and it didnt burn much gas i love the feeling i got when i would start to push the gas pedal in this car
